Black teenagers don't lose as much weight from exercise as white girls

Exercising may not be enough to stop black teenage girls from gaining weight, says a new study of 1,148 American girls.

Promoting physical activity may not be enough to prevent black girls - who have a higher rate of obesity to begin with - from gaining weight.

Being physically active at age 12 had no impact whatsoever on whether black teenagers were obese at 14, whereas white girls were 85% less likely to be obese.

The results may lead to a shake-up of health advice for black teenage girls.

Children should be active from young. It becomes more difficult to lose the weight as time goes on. Further, diet and portion size play a significant role in weight loss.

This isn't surprising though. Too many black children are less active during their younger years, especially when they are in single parent households. The parents work and they stay in the house - inactive. Boys sometimes can go and roam but it really isn't safe for girls. So it's no wonder the girls are bigger around this age. This is a result of years of inadequate physical activity.

It isn't really about weight, this is why I hate these non peer reviewed articles that play with words. Maybe the black girls have more bone density or heavier muscles. It's about inches not weight, seeing as the muscle and bone are heavier but take up less space than fat. Plenty of thin females can be just as heavy or feel heavier than thicker females, so of course physical activity may not affect their weight.

But how much does that really pertain to obesity? There are girls of all backgrounds who have more bone density or heavier muscles but does that really cause obesity? Perhaps a bit heavier than the average but obese? Maybe such characteristics might pull a few out of the obesity category but they would likely still be overweight.

All that is true but even with all socioeconomic things being equal, I think the article statement would still be true to a large extent. Ppl of african descent are in more cases than other races, genetically predisposed to be both heavier (not actually obese) in some cases and plain ole obese in others. For the former..those that are healthy, have low body fat and just built "like a black girl" we need to make sure they have healthy self images...for the latter, now that there is some real scientific discourse on this, hopefully it will lead to new solutions geared specifically towards our children. Its important that we stop lumping together the latter and the former tho.

I'm a little confused did you read the whole thing? your comment seems like its not really based on the article.

I used to date an army recruiter and he said that when he used the height + weight thing for black girls, they were often overweight; yet they wouldn't look overweight to him...so he'd do the measurement method and they'd come out fine.

That's what bothers me, the article is not comprehensive enough and uses too much empircal guessing. Alot of these 'scientific' articles are passed off as news. If an obese black girl with a heavier bone density loses fat in 3 weeks or so, which is much lighter, it may or may not show on the scale. People have gained weight yet looked leaner due to exercise because they put on more muscle. The article mentions nothing about inches.

The article is dealing largely with obesity not simply being heavier in bone density/muscle. Genetic predisposition comes from lifestyle, sometimes over generations. There are seemingly more obese people of African descent than before due to lifestyle. Honestly, there are A LOT of heavy boned whites, for example. Plenty of those Germanic folks have a heavier built than a lot of people of African descent. No one is stating that African descendants should exactly fit the weight standards but plenty children should be healthier in terms of weight.

Overweight but not obese. They would need to be acceptable by ARMY standards somehow.

Young Black girls are spending too much time exercising their mouth....verbally & orally. On Streets, Buses, Subways, Back school stairwells. More walking & running, less laying on their backs, knees, and forearms.

Yes, there are quite a few issues with the article. However, I am not inclined to argue that there is not an obesity issue for many children of African descent based on lifestyle.
