Black Celebrities Who Say Theyíre Not African American

Black Celebrities Who Say They're Not African American | MadameNoire

i think some of these people must read imix

    RAVEN SYMONE

ďIím tired of being labeled. Iím an American. Iím not an African-American; Iím an AmericanÖIím a colorless personĒ

BILL COSBY..must be friends with robblaten and the educator

In his controversial 2004 NAACP event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education, Bill Cosby said call him anything but African-American:

ďWe are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they donít know a thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.Ē
and SUPERHEAD...I can understand the first part of her statement, but the rest is just silly
ďI think people forget, Iím an islander. Iím not African American. I donít have like African American struggles. I just donít. I donít have the same history. So, and Iím not even tryna be facetiousÖThereís a serious mind state that comes with being Black in America and being a Black American. And the history that comes with that. And all things that are passed down from generation to generationÖShame. Shame sexually. Sexually shaming. Shame on the female gender. Shame just all kinds of shame. And abuse. And belittling and all those things that come from post-slavery.Ē
and the rest of the people on the list, some of them, just have to shake your head....

you just don't have the BALLS to OVERTLY AGREE....rather just do it INDIRECTLY

weak men only can deal with weaker women

in the presence of strength you diminish...

It's always good to no longer want to be black after banking on the black factor.

    European Chinese
    Australian German
    South American Nigerian
    African Chilean
    Asian Sudanese
    North American Brazilian

Do any of those terms mean anything? Why aren't they widely used?

The term African American makes no sense to me. Neither does black. Pick a country. Most slaves in the NA trade ended up in Ghana...just say you are Ghanaian American, and love up and learn the culture of Ghana. If that doesn't float your boat, choose another country in Africa where you determine your ancestors came from. I think that would lead to a real national pride.

The article is poorly written and equates African-American with black...

Zoe Saldana has said clearly that she is black but that she is Latina. So what? They said Keyshia Cole said she is both biracial and black. What's the problem? And Nahla...they are really so pressed to claim her? She is mixed and more European than African. The father is right to want her heritage described accurately.

People listed in the article are saying different things for different reasons, much of which has little to do with a title. Talk about fishing for a story. That site should do better.

i didn't take issue w/ some of their reasons. i'm all about acknowledging all parts of you, but to each his own, yes?
you don't have to disrespect or insult others simply to hold your own ground. if you do, that shows how shaky your own position is.

Well hey, good for you if your whole identity is defined by being pulled over by a random cop.

African American is used to represent race and ethnicity. For example, the US census has African American/ Black which many Africans, biracials etc do not check, but write in their ethnicity or how they identify. Because the census is about race, these people are counted in with the black population, with the exception of Afro Hispanics. In the media or news, when an AA has an accent, then the media tend to refer to the black by their ethnicity. for example, black Actors from the UK .

you cant put ravens and cosby comments in the same bucket.

what he said is true, you cannot be labelled something you arent.

being black and being african american are two different things.

Regardless of the alleged reason they renounce their blackness these celebrities always seem to want to run away from who they are.
Black, colored, n1gga, negro, African American, Afro Caribbean etc
It's a moving target which name doesn't offend them when it is never about the name.

They claim they don't want to be labeled when what they mean is they don't want to be categorized or more accurately, stigmatized.
Contrast that with Caucasians. Can hardly find famous white people who don't want to be identified as a honky.
