I'd take Rodman in Detroit, Olajuwon in 92-96, Garnett in his prime on the Twolves and Pippen in his prime

Olajuwon is in my top 3 all time favorite players overall.
    After Magic, and The Glove.

This would have to be broken down by position.
The glove was the best defensive point guard in my opinion.

    dang..just now?

I figured it would be Payton. They didn't him 'The Glove' for nothing.

listen when you are capable of defending practically every position on a the floor in a given game the is no denying you defensive prowess.

I find it interesting that Gary Payton said John Stockton was more difficult to defend than Michael Jordon,

Then again, Payton vs. Jordon was one of the greater match ups IMO

In the modern era....overall the most disruptive defensive force irregardless of position was undoubtedly Hakeem Olajuwon.

He is the greatest shotblocker ever and not to mention he retired number 7 in steals which is insane for a Center. No other Center even cracks the top 40. He could cover the court defensively with the agility of smaller guards.

Of course many will say Bill Russell of all-time, but I'm not certain his defensive dominance would translate into the era Hakeem played in.

Caan have this discussion without mentioning Russell.
And, as a Lakers fan, I'd have to include Michael Cooper, although he was never too well known outside of LA.

GP got taken to school by Robert Pack 'n Nick Van Exel h2h in back to back playoff years in the mid 90s, he was tempermental and could easily get thrown off his game. I guess I think he's at best the best defensive PG ever.

But I think Bowen and Pippen were more influential defensive forces than he was. And no guard or forward can ever have the defensive influence a Center like Hakeem or DRob had.

Since everybody's chiming in with the standouts, you can't have a defensive discussion without Dikembe Mutombo and Alonzo Mourning.

Jordan was quite the defender too.
But often his defensive game was overlooked because of his offensive ability.

Charles Oakley is another name that comes to mind, even if his name is more likely to be named in the "grimeyest" discussion...
