Arrow Being called Black American vs West Indian

So, you're a West Indian (Haitian, Bajan, Jamaican, Trini, whatever ....substitute any other Caribbean nationality here), but people constantly refer to you as being Black American... not black (as in race), but Black-American (as in culture & nationality).

    Do you...

    a) Get offended?

    b) Correct them and say, "Well, I'm actually West Indian."

    c) Just say yes and let it go cause they're not going to appreciate the difference between the two anyway.

Do you believe there is a difference between being Black American and being West Indian? Significant enough to warrant mentioning if someone made a mistake?

Of course there is. A Korean wouldn't accept being called Chinese. A Kenyan wouldn't accept being called a Nigerian. So there's a good reason to correct a person who makes that mistake. I do vice-versa, so...

I usually correct them and say I am Caribbean-American.

I hate filling out those forms that says African-American, cause I don't consider myself that. In that case I usually check other. But if Black is an option I usually go with that.

I always go for the option of correcting them...
I put other or mixed on any applications and then if asked in an interview I proceed to explain.
