RIHANNA IN SPOTLIGHT. The Barbados Music Awards last night got going with much glitz and glamour as the who's who in the entertainment industry and in Barbados, arrived amidst pomp and ceremony at Sherbourne Conference Centre. Many arrived by limousines to a red carpet welcome. The star of the night, however, was singing sensation Rihanna, who looked stunning in her Nefatari-designed outfit. Her arrival in a limo, just before 8 p.m. caused a stir as the local, regional and internatiional media flocked to get the best shots of Barbados' singing star. Barbados' shining star Rihanna as she arrived at Sherbourne Conference Centre last night for the inaugural Barbados Entertainment Awards staged by Timeless Barbados Entertainment Agency. ØGlitz and glamour as Barbadian artists honouredØ
    Web Posted - Mon Jan 09 2006

It was a night of glitz and glamour at the Sherbourne Conference Centre last night as dozens of Barbadian artists were honoured at the first ever Barbados Music Awards.

Many local and regional media persons gathered on the red carpet as some of Barbados biggest names in the local music industry gathered in exquisite gowns and dapper suits. Not to be outdone were the hundreds of Barbadians who came to see the show. They too arrived in the eye-catching outfits ranging from the elegant to outrageous.

The even was conceptualised by Ronnie Morris, director of Timeless Barbados Entertainment Agency and was billed as the "ultimate experience" as it honoured many in the local music fraternity. Alison Hinds arriving with her husband Edward Walcott told the media that she thought the show was a "great idea, while Rupert 'Rupee" Clarke said he thought it was "a blessing" to see such a show honour so many.

Musician and poet Adisa Andwele said that Barbadian music "has been evolving" noting that artists as diverse as "Ivory", "The Merry Men", Edwin and Rihanna all came from Barbados yet have made head way internationally with very different sounds. He added it was important to acknowledge this diversity.

All presenters, performers and nominees arrived in stretch limousines, with Def Jam artist Rihanna being the last to arrive. The show opened with Nahtalee and Shontelle singing their soca hit "Colours" right on time at the 8 p.m. start. Performers included Rihanna, Toni Norville, Edwin Yearwood, Carolyn Leacock and soon-to-be signed performer Dwayne Husbands.

I have a few pics...I'll ask to see if I can post any of them. Wonder how long it will take for people to complain about Rihanna's dress.

The entertainment industry in Barbados and fans turned out their numbers last night at the Sherbourne Conference Centre for the first ever Barbados Music Awards put on by Timeless Barbados Entertainment Agency.

The star studded affair saw Rhianna capturing eight awards.

It was the closest thing to the Grammy's in Barbados....

Red carpet ..... Outfits to kill ...... And of course the glitz and glamour as the cameras rolled ....

It was a national music awards show that every Barbadian could be proud of.

On the inside ... It was full house .... As Cassandra Samuel and Wayne Cool Symmonds whipped up the audience setting the stage for several top performances ....

In the end emerging Barbadian superstar Rhianna walked away with eight awards ... Including best reggae single, best reggae/dancehall album ...best dance single, best selling female artist of the year.... And entertainer of the year....

Shontelle also did well teaming up with Natahlee for the best soca single ...Colours and with Billy Kincaid for the best hip hop single in Take Me Home ....

Rupee was the best selling male artist and male artist of the year ...

In the gospel category Kareen Clarke won best gospel album and best gospel single .....

Lifetime achievement awards were presented to the Merrymen and Charles D Lewis who've sold over a million records and have decades of hard work within the local music industry .

The Mighty Gabby received a living legend award for his genius in music and the performing arts ....

And Nicholas Brancker for his efforts in single handedly revolutionising how Barbadian music is perceived internationally received the icon award ......

On a glitzy historic night at Sherbourne they were all winners .... But the greatest one is the local music industry which will forever be changed in the minds of those who were there.

Prime Minister and Minister of Culture Owen Arthur saw the show in terms of its significance to the development of the nation.

    Thumbs up Spot On!!!

Local Hip-Hop Recording Artiste, Billy Kincaid

Last night was pure niceness; from the red carpet to the stretch limos, from the rich jazzy audio in the background as invitees arrived to the quasi-royal fanfare sending off the awardees, t'was a classy evening indeed.
Kudos to Ronnie Morris and his team. Everything went smoothly and the show actually started RIGHT on time. Needless to say, I (along with everyone within earshot) was very impressed...we couldn't help but comment on it the entire evening and with the sumptuous hors d'oeuvres it simply could not get any better than this!

The nominees looked lovely and the performances were ALL on point. Paula Hinds and Kareen Clarke can SING...and watch out for that all-girl group that sang the National Anthem..wuh loss! Seeing Magnet Man perform on stage was also amazing...ppl can't begin to appreciate how big this man is away from home. Rihanna's set was pretty cool, even though she had to lip-sync at some points. If anyone was in doubt of how much talent we have here in Bim...this show would've served to make them a hardcore supporter of our artistes.

The show was eye-opening in the sense that I didn't know just how much some of our local artistes/producers had achieved. There were some mini bios throughout the night and it was pretty impressive to hear some of the things that they had experienced in their careers like working with some major folks in the business (Roberta Flack, Smokey Robinson etc) playing for the Queen and all such like it.

Even though it lasted nearly four hours, I left feeling that it was most definitely a time well spent...plus de complimentary drinks really hit de spot at de end of de night. Red wine just kept on flowing...TRU-OUT!

Anyhoo...congrats to all de winners of the inaugural BMAs! Great start, let's keep moving!
