    'Point' pensioners witness bank heist
    Carolyn Kissoon South Bureau

    Friday, October 2nd 2009

Pensioners who went to the Republic Bank branch in Point Fortin to cash their senior citizens grant cheques were witnesses yesterday to a bank heist involving three armed thieves.

Police said the men entered the bank around 8.35 a.m. pretending to be customers. They joined the long queue and waited on their turn.

The men then walked up to a female teller and handed her a bag. One jumped over the counter and began filling the bag with cash. The men then calmly walked out of the bank.

The incident occurred at the bank's Techier Road branch.

The Point Fortin police were alerted and officers involved in a nearby raid responded to the report.

A 21-year-old Laventille man was taken into custody about an hour later. A manhunt has been launched for the two other suspects. Those men are also believed to be from north Trinidad.

The bag containing the undisclosed sum of money was not recovered. The bank was closed for the day after the robbery.
