    DESCRIPTION
DanceAfrica, America’s largest and most vibrant annual celebration of African and African-American music, dance, and culture-and BAM’s longest-running performance series- returns on Memorial Day weekend for its 27th season. At the helm, as always: the ebullient Chuck Davis, DanceAfrica’s founding elder and artistic director. Under Davis’ mentorship the festival has grown exponentially, from its modest beginnings as a Brooklyn-based community tradition into an internationally known cultural extravaganza-and a model for DanceAfrica festivals in Chicago and Washington, DC.

This year’s festival, “A Dancer's Path: Ancient Traditions, Modern Trends,” offers a typically abundant range of activities. In the Howard Gilman Opera House: the Ghana-based Nii Tettey Tetteh and the Kusun Ensemble, whose fusion of music and dance, called “Nokoko,” infuses traditional music with the unmistakable rhythms of jazz; Zulu Connection, a lavishly costumed, stilt-walking dance troupe from New Orleans; the Bambara Drum and Dance Ensemble, a nationally known troupe with deep roots in New York City; and annual favorites, the young dancers of the BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica ensemble.

There’s lots more, including live music in BAMcafé, an African Diaspora film series at BAM Rose Cinemas, masterclasses for young dancers, education programs with the Restoration Youth Arts Academy in BedStuy, and the one-and-only outdoor DanceAfrica Bazaar featuring African crafts, food, and fashion. Agoo!! Amée!!
