Thumbs up Antiguan Contingent on Carnival Road Show in UK

    Entertainers eager for UK tour
    Thursday April 26 2007

    by A. Aisha Caleb-Browne

Members of the touring ensemble who will today be en route to the United Kingdom as part of the Carnival Development Committee (CDC) road show initiative have expressed eagerness and anticipation in representing Antigua & Barbuda.

Reigning Carnival queen Jamilla Gregory revealed that she was looking forward to this trip as it is her first official overseas trip as queen of Carnival.

“I’m finally getting to execute my duties and be an ambassador for Antigua,” she said.

Rowan Hector of jam band El-a-Kru said he considered the trip a great opportunity not only for the music of Antigua, but also Antiguans who are living in England and the UK to feel a part of home.

Hector disclosed that his band has been receiving tremendous feedback from countries outside the Caribbean, England being one of them. “That song from the album, Expose, has been doing tremendously well so it’s also an opportunity for people to be able to put a face to the name,” he stated.

Representing the steel pan fraternity, Aubrey ‘Lacu’ Samuel said he was happy to have been given the opportunity by the CDC to be a part of the touring group adding that he was confident that they have a good team of people who will do their best.

“Soca music is for all o’ we,” was the tag line of reigning Soca Monarch Claudette “CP” Peters who echoed the sentiments of her travel colleagues, adding that it would be an opportunity for some of Antigua’s finest talents to make waves in England.

“I know that we are going to make waves in England. It will be my/our first time doing something like this and we have a lot of Antiguans there who are dying to see us, our costumes and our performances,” Peters said.

The 50th golden anniversary of Carnival will run from 21 July to 7 August and will boast a revised format to include shows specifically commemorating the “big celebration”.

Initially set for 21 April, the launch is now slated to take place on the eve of the 50 days before Carnival with a series of “Road to Carnival” activities planned by the CDC, under the theme “Music. Mas. Fantasy. Come celebrate our golden jubilee”.

I believe after gauging how successful this trip is, they are supposed to add other destinations to the tour.... including North America.
