Unhappy Antigua honeymoon murder: Couple to be buried together

The British couple shot on their honeymoon in Antigua will be buried together after a funeral service at the church where they were married three weeks earlier.

Family and friends of Ben Mullany and his new bride Catherine are to return to the 12th century St John the Evangelist Church in Cilybebyll, near Pontardawe, South Wales.

Mr Mullany, 31 never woke from a coma following the shooting and his life support machine was turned off after a scan for brainstem activity proved negative.

His bride, also 31, a doctor, died instantly after she was shot in the head during the bungled robbery in Antigua a week ago.

Mr Mullany, a physiotherapist, had been flown home to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, by an air ambulance in a last, desperate attempt to save his life. His wife had trained as a doctor at the same hospital earlier this year.

He had a fractured skull and a bullet lodged in the back of his head and doctors in Antigua had already declared him brain dead.

A spokesman for Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust said: "Following brainstem testing Ben Mullany has now passed away. The thoughts of all the staff who were involved in Ben's care are with his family at this very sad time."

As the hunt for the killer became a double murder inquiry police in Antigua revealed they were questioning a beachside marijuana dealer who goes by the name of "Cloud".

The bandanna-wearing Rastafarian, whose real name is Clarence James, regularly befriends holidaymakers on Antigua's white sandy beaches.

Detectives have questioned more than 30 people but say he is the one of "most interest" to them.

They are questioning whether he has an alibi for the 5am shooting at the couple's luxury cottage at the Cocos Hotel.

James offers to drive visitors around the island and detectives are investigating a claim that Mr and Mrs Mullany let him take them on a vehicle tour.

Det Inspector Nuffield Burnette said: "We currently have two people in custody, including James, and James is the person we are most interested in."

But he added: "We are not close to charging him."

Police are pursuing all other avenues and more people are likely to be arrested and questioned.

Friends said James was an unlikely character to be involved in violence. His one-storey pale green wooden cottage in the village of Bolans is adorned with butterflies, wind chimes and a heart shaped ornament reading "Love Endures".

There is a Union Jack tied at the front and he is said to have a white girlfriend who he met when she holidayed on the island.

A team of detectives from Scotland Yard and South Wales Police arrived in Antigua at the weekend.

The five-strong squad includes a forensic expert and is headed by one of Britain's top murder investigators, Det Supt Keith Niven.

Mr Niven said: "The forensic side of this is going to be crucial and once we do an examination we'll be in a much better position. We want to get this solved, and the sooner the better."

Asked about James he said: "Some local police aren't too convinced he's involved. But his status could change at any time as the inquiry progresses."

Prayers were said for Mr and Mrs Mullany at local churches in Wales at the weekend.

At the Tabernacle Chapel in Pontardawe the Rev Gareth Morgan Jones, who he had known Mrs Mullany since she was at school, said: "Catherine was a talented person but more than that she was a person full of love.

"She was a caring person, loving people and that's why she was an asset to the medical profession."

This is really sad, I heard that they took him off life support this morning.

I hope they find the person(s) responsible for this, I just hope they don't pin it on anyone because they want to solve the case and not look bad. I hope they really take their time and investigate this to find the real culprits.
