Talking America's Most Hated Baby Names

Baby Name Wizard blogger Laura Wattenberg scoured the Internet for discussions about baby names to come up with her list of the Most-Hated Baby Names in America. She tracked negative comments about specific names and tallied the viewpoints expressed on hundreds of message boards.

Wattenberg skipped over truly outrageous names and focused on those everyday, “normal baby names that, for whatever reason, set your teeth on edge.”

She makes clear that the names in her list aren’t necessarily “bad” or even unpopular–in fact her list includes some of today’s most popular names. The list is solely based on number of negative mentions on the Internet.

Here’s a rundown of Wattenberg’s list along with her commentary on why people object to each name:

    Most-hated girls’ names
    1. Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards)

Wattenberg says: “A landslide winner, no surprise,” Wattenber says. “Nevaeh may be the most stylistically divisive name in America.”

    2. Destiny “This name seemed to run afoul of two groups: people annoyed by ‘virtue names,’ and people who grouped it with other dreamy choices like Heaven and Candy as ‘stripper-ish,” Wattenberg says.

    3. Madison Tied with Destiny. “The negative reactions to this name were particularly strong, especially in non-standard spellings. Reasons were seldom given; it just seemed to grate on people,” Wattenberg says.

    4. Mackenzie “Often presented in a group with other Mc- names, [such as McKenna] which several posters described as ‘low-class.’”

    5. Addison Tied with Gertrude and Kaitlyn. “Sometimes grouped with Madison, and sometimes held as an example of the No 1 most-cited loathing category: ‘boys’ names used for girls,’ Watt

    6. Gertrude “When the conversation focused on ‘ugly’ names, old-fashioned Germanic names like Gertrude, Bertha and Helga ruled,” Wattenburg says.

    7. Kaitlyn “The poster child for the No. 2 most common objection: ‘made-up spellings,’” Wattenberg says. “Some people specifically exempted the classic spelling Caitlin from their wrath.”

    8. Makayla Tied with Bertha and Hope. This name gets bashed for the same reasons Mackenzie gets trashed.

    9. Bertha This name is disliked for the same reason Gertrude is loathed.

    10. Hope “To my surprise, the objection to virtue names extended to traditional choices like Hope, Faith and Grace,” Wattenburg says.

    Most-hated boys’ names
    1. Jayden “The overwhelming theme for boys’ names was a backlash against the rhyming -ayden family,” Wattenberg says. “Many felt there were just too many of these names, and ‘it’s getting really old.’ Others said the names sounded too childish or feminine. The names were often mentioned as a group, but Jayden was frequently singled out.”

    2. Brayden This name is in the same camp as Jayden above.

    3. AidenThis name is in the same camp as Jayden above.

    4. Kaden Tied with Aiden. This name is in the same camp as Jayden above.

    5. Hunter “Objections included ‘should only be a last name’ and ‘too violent,’” Wattenberg says.

    6. Hayden “Part of the -ayden family but mentioned much less often than the others. It seems to be considered a little more mature and established-sounding than the rest of the clan.

    7. Bentley “A lot of contempt was shown in mentions of this name, as people considered the luxury-car association ‘trashy.’”

    8. Tristan “Described as ‘fakey’ and ‘unlikeable,’” Wattenberg says.

    9. Michael “The whipping boy for people who scorned ‘common’ names. Names like Matthew, Sarah and Emily also came up several times,” Wattenberg says. “Notably, they were the most likely names to be defended by others in the conversation.”

    10. Jackson “No consistency to the reasons,” Wattenberg says. “Some grouped it with Peyton as ‘way too trendy,’ others with Jack as ‘old-fashioned and worn out.’”

Addison was in the running for my son's name. Thank God i didn't choose it.

I LOVVEE Jackson tho. I think if i have another son i'd name him something ending in 'Son'

Jackson, Lexington, Arlington etc. Those names are just so classic and beautiful to me.
