    African AMerican culture rich?

As with regards to a previous post about the varied richness of our Caribbean region, what are your guys opinions or experiences with African American culture? Do ayo think that African American culture is rich, or if even they have a culture? I know when West Indians move to the mainland, it is easier for the majority of us to just assimilate with African-American culture, and a lot of us to even abandon our own rich culture by only cooking soul food, yanking or by only listening to hiphop music (Ive seen this happen numerous times)- im just curious about this whole matter, but if you guys were not of Caribbean origin, or didnt have family from the caribbean and were just straight up african american, how do you think ur life would have been?

    Yes it does.

And I feel like at one time, African American culture WAS rich, but in the last 30 years it's been exploited and commercialised so bad that they don't really have such a strong sense of culture anymore. And the same could be said for the West Indies as well, my generation (18-24) has been STRONGLY Americanised as well.

Of course, African-American culture is rich - it's full of all kinds of traditions. It's interesting that you ask whether AAs have a culture and then actually refer to aspects of their culture in your next sentence. If we weren't of Caribbean background and were AA, then we would then practice AA culture specific to the region where our family originated.

fo true. a lot of west indians see and mimic what they see on the television such as BET (which has been the demise of Black culture) and think its cool to be Americanized. I dont find African American culture to be rich at all. so much of Black American culture IS American culture and there is absolutely nothing culturally that African-American people can claim for themselves anymore. Hip hop music has been mainstreamed and is mimicked by the American mass and is obviously no longer a "black thing". even yet, i never liked the idea of people lumping hip-hop music to describe AA culture.

but is that really their fault if mainstream society hijacks and makes common what was once specific/special to them? If anything it implies the opposite....that AA culture was/is rich enough for the average American to exploit and use to sell cars on TV.

Now that isnt the same as agreeing that I like BET or other aspects about AA culture, but what we see as mainstream is it really what things started out as in the first place in AA communities? I dont think so.
Once upon a time hip hop culture was a rich and interesting thing before it got sanitized and cleaned up for the masses.

irony is, nobody knows what AA culture is, because they don't teach it in schools...you just gotta live it to know it

whatever you define culture as in your own island, there is an AA equivalent to it

    music
    food
    religion
    rituals
    language
    behavior
    etc etc
you ALL AGREE with my opinion, which is why NONE of you ever EFFECTIVELY DISPUTE IT

you ONLY have faith in the WOMEN'S ability to ELEVATE which is why you only FOCUS ON WOMEN...you ALL have long given up on Black men

you just don't have the BALLS to OVERTLY AGREE....rather just do it INDIRECTLY

weak men only can deal with weaker women

in the presence of strength you diminish...

This is an issue of exposure and being sensible. There are so many aspects of African-American culture that "belong" to them and also can be claimed because people are aware of the cultural origins of plenty practices. Since they are Americans and have been in the country for generations, then of course the richness of their culture will influence others. Here are just a few aspects of their culture:

    Gogo music
    Stepping
Religions like Nation of Islam, Hebrew Israelites, the AME church (born out of AA culture)
    Literature
The Black" church (an experience in itself)
    AA Gospel and Spirituals
    Juneteenth (holiday among AAs)

Since when does something have to be a "black" thing in order to be rich? Some West Indians are so racial its not even funny. So let me ask you, is VI culture not rich because even though the people are mostly of African descent, people like the Frenchies take part in the culture? You can't claim VI culture as only being a "black" thing. So is your culture not rich?

No West Indian culture is limited to being a "black" thing, especially in countries like Trinidad, Guyana, Cayman Islands etc? Are you going to argue that those countries don't have rich culture? I would like to see that one.

I wonder if some West Indians really have an inferiority complex when it comes to other cultures outside the region and even within it. Why would anyone feel the need state that they don't feel certain other groups don't have culture? SMH.

    Exactly.

Yes, they don't like the obscurity of west indian culture in relation to the world, i dont mind my culture not being at the forefront, but people on this board think otherwise.

it's not only that, WI just want to feel or have been made to feel superior to african americans

trust me, it comes out in many different forms.....

trust me, although we talking about culture now....so a few people are going to be empathetic with AA's in regards to that...let the conversation switch to class, behavior, education, economics, social status etc etc...everybody going to be drawing the lines
