11 Shootings In DC Last Night.
By Clarence Williams
Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, July 20, 2007; 5:38 AM A series of shootings erupted late last night and early this morning across an eastern swath of the District, wounding 11 people in six different incidents in little more than an hour, D.C. police said. None of the wounded victims appeared to suffer life-threatening injuries, authorities said early this morning. Few details could be learned about the circumstances of the shootings or the specific conditions of individual victims. The gunfire began at about 11:30 p.m. and kept officers scrambling until nearly 1 a.m., especially in the 7th Police District of Southeast Washington, which recorded four incidents. In Northeast, 6th Police District officers found a man shot in the leg in the 3600 block of Jay Street NE -- a residential area near the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens -- at about 11:32. Eight minutes later, officers were called to the 4400 block of Ponds Street NE, about a mile away, where two men had been shot in the legs. Meanwhile, in the Congress Heights neighborhood, 7th District officers found a teenaged male wounded in the 600 block of Raleigh Place SE just before 11:30 p.m., said police Capt. Ricky Mitchell. The teenager was flown to a hospital, but details of his injuries could not be learned. Within a minute or so, authorities were called to the 2700 block of Robinson Place SE, 1.65 miles away from Raleigh Place near the Suitland Parkway, after a drive-by shooting left two men with graze wounds in the legs, officials said. Sometime around 12:30 a.m., three men and a woman were shot in an alley of the Barry Farm housing complex in the 1200 block of Eaton Road SE. The woman was shot in the buttocks, one man was shot in the chest, another shot in the back and the third suffered a thigh wound, police said. Finally at about 12:48, 7th District police were sent to the 700 block of Congress Street SE -- just a few blocks from the site of the Raleigh Place shooting -- where a man had suffered a graze wound. Police said they were receiving few, if any, tips from witnesses to the different incidents. "The problem is no one is coming forward," a frustrated Mitchell said in an interview. "No one saw anything." Last edited by BobbyRomance; 07-20-2007 at 10:15 AM.. |
