It's all in the music...... for instance zouk is more keyboard based...... kompas has a lot of guitar rifts and horns....... I mean you gotta listen and you can make out the difference.

ZOUK is from GUADELOUPE & MARTINIQUE, it was created in 1979 and was an up tempo music with KASSAV, now it getting slower what we call ZOUK-LOVE !
KONPA is from Haiti, it was created in the 50's, and gave birth to ZOUK which is a mix of Cadencelypso (Dominica), GWO KA (traditional music from Guadeloupe), CADENCE (Martinique & GUADELOUPE music gene of the 70's)african rythms & even rock rhythm...
SOUKOUS is from ZAIRE (Dom. Rep. of Congo now) it's an up tempo genre of the 80's with the predominance of the sound of the guitar.

Now u have a new genre that we call KONPA-LOVE in Martinique. It's from Haiti and is doing very big in the french west-indies. TANYA ST VAL's "What's up" song is a Konpalove song.
