Boyz go local
for World Cup qualifier against Canada Sean Williams Thursday, August 14, 2008 ![]() Technical director of Jamaica's football, Brazilian Rene Simoes, has selected a 20-man squad of mainly local-based talent which includes one debutante, three rookies and a midfield discard for next Wednesday's CONCACAF World Cup qualifying game against Canada in Toronto. The new player is 18-year-old Reno FC midfielder Davion Thorpe, while clubmate Evan Taylor, Sporting Central's Jevaughn Watson and Colorado Rapids' Omar Cummings complete the list of those making recent debuts at the Senior level. Taylor made his debut on June 3, in the team's 5-1 win over St Vincent and the Grenadines at 'The Office', while Watson and Cummings had theirs in a 0-0 draw with El Salvador in Texas, USA, on July 26. Simoes was particularly impressed with Cummings and cited the striker's ability to move on and off the ball as a valuable asset to the team. Meanwhile, Harbour View's mercurial midfielder, 30-year-old Jermaine Hue, is making a return since he was last summoned for the Ash Wednesday home friendly against Costa Rica, but the tricky player did not take part in the game which ended 1-1. A notable absentee from the squad is 28-year-old England-based striker Marlon King, whose omission comes as a surprise as he has been one of the team's top goalscorers since making his debut in 2004. King, who played in Jamaica's 7-0 demolition of The Bahamas in the first leg of the two-way first-round tie at the National Stadium on June 15, was kept on the bench in the second match at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Complex three days later as the Reggae Boyz won 6-0. The squad is a shift from the top-heavy foreign-based group that competed against The Bahamas, and only seven of those overseas-based professionals have been recalled. They are captain Ricardo Gardner, Ian Goodison, Andy Williams, Tyrone Marshall, Luton Shelton, Deon Burton and Demar Phillips. Also absent from the last squad are UK-based Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Omar Daley, Simon Ford and Richard Langley. The Reggae Boyz, who plunged to an all-time low of 108th in the FIFA Rankings last month, are in Group B of the CONCACAF semifinals against powerhouse Mexico, Honduras and Canada, in what has been deemed the "Group of Death". The team, which will depart Saturday for Toronto, has scheduled two warm-up games against local Premier League clubs at Brancourt in Clarendon. In the first on Monday, they whipped Waterhouse 5-1 and are due to tackle NPL champions Portmore United today at 4:00 pm in the other. Meanwhile, officials for the Canada game are referee Carlos Batres, assistant referees Rodolfo Gonzales and Alejo Mendez from Guatemala. Their countryman, Walter Lopez, will be the fourth official, while Francis Cezair of Trinidad & Tobago is match commissioner and Carlos Ortiz, the referee assessor. Squad: Goalkeepers - Donovan Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers; Defenders - Marshall, Goodison, Keneil Moodie, O'Brian Woodbine, Demar Stewart, Phillips, Jermaine Taylor; Midfielders - Rudolph Austin, Thorpe, E Taylor, Watson, Hue, Gardner, Wolry Wolfe; Forwards - Burton, Shelton, Cummings and Williams. |

Big up di Boyz on another big win! But cyah get too far ahead of mahself caws we still 2 points behind Honduras and need to whop up Canada and hope that Mexico beat Honduras. Moving on to the next round is not in our hands... so I am not comfortable. I much rather be in Trinidad's position...
Good win by T&T too!!! |
