General news, notes and observations...
Jim Leyritz (former Yankee World Series hero) arrested for DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Apparently he was out celebrating his 44th birthday and had a little too much to drink and then decided to drive. He allegedly ran a red light and struck another car and a woman was ejected from that car and died. Not to diminish his role in causing this....but for the life of me I don't understand why people still getting ejected from vehicles in this day and age. a) buckle up....b) don't drink and drive.
NFL fines ref Jim Quirk $8k for grabbing Nick Barnett around the neck last Sunday. I believe that the ref overstepped his bounds by being too aggressive...but $8,000.00??? I understand this isn't his first incident, but damn...the guy's ready to cash in his AARP retirement...8 grand is a little too much in my mind. Broncos WR Rod Smith may be forced to retire due to injury. He's been playing on a bad hip for some time and looks like he may have done some permanent damage to it and may need hip replacement surgery. Damn. Rod Smith used to rile me up by making plays back when I used to hate on Denver...but I really like and admire this guy. From college QB at Southern Miss to undrafted receiver....and surviving as a top player in the NFL for so long...I feel for him, but he's accomplished a lot and seems happy regardless. ...small note, was real surprised...and pleasantly so, to see former Vikings RB Robert Smith working as a college football analyst for ESPN. He was one of the players I really admired in his day. Faced with pressure from his Ohio State coaches to take easier classes, he stuck to his Bio Pre-med curriculum and did well enough to consider med school...although the NFL was a very nice alternative. Good guy...nice to see him still doing well (probably earning six figures) and still working in the business. |

yeah I was a big fan of Robert Smith...they had another RB too can't remember his name, something Bennett I believe. Nice RB tandem...and shame Dennie didn't get his title that year...they were a beast offense under Cunningham.

yeah dred...that one threw me for a loop b/c Leyritz was such a good, underspoken player...hard worker. Of course all of that means nothing...all it takes is one momentary lapse in judgment, assuming that this wasn't a pattern of behavior on his part. I just feel bad for him (and the victim/her family of course) because you wake up...it's your birthday...you never once think that you're about to go out and kill someone and fack up the rest of your life.
