09/19/08 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) San Antonio Silver Stars

NEW YORK - San Antonio Silver Stars forward Sophia Young earned her first all-defensive team honors as a member of the first-team squad announced by the WNBA on Friday.

Young joined veteran all-defensive players Lisa Leslie, Tamika Catchings, Ticha Penicheiro and Tully Bevilaqua on the first-team. The Silver Stars forward is the youngest member of the group.

The WNBA All-Defensive Second Team consists of Chicago Sky center Sylvia Fowles (12 points), Detroit Shock guard Deanna Nolan (10 points), Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson (nine points), Sacramento Monarchs forward Rebekkah Brunson (eight points) and Detroit Shock guard Katie Smith (eight points).

Jackson was named the 2007 Defensive Player of the Year and was a member of the 2007 All-Defensive First Team while Nolan was selected to the First Team in 2007 and the Second Team in 2005 and 2006. Brunson was a member of the 2007 Second Team. Fowles, a rookie, and Smith were both voted to the Second Team for the first time.

St Vincent's Young stars
Published on: 9/20/08.

SACRAMENTO, California – St Vincent and the Grenadines star forward Sophia Young played a prominent role as the San Antonio Silver Stars beat Sacramento Monarchs 85-78 in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) play-off opener on Thursday night.

San Antonio led the Western Conference battle by 45-29 at the half and repelled a strong rally from the home side to win by seven points at the ARCO Arena.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series takes place tonight in San Antonio and Game 3 – if necessary – is also slated for San Antonio, on Monday.

The Silver Stars, with home court advantage, are heavy favourites for this Western Conference series after they posted a league-best 24-10 record in the regular season and were 15-2 at home.

Becky Hammon logged a game-high 30 points, including six three-pointers, plus two rebounds and two assists for San Antonio.

Young, a leading candidate for MVP this season, collected 17 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

After outscoring Sacramento 22-13 and 23-16 in the first two quarters, San Antonio wobbled a bit in the last two quarters but Young stepped up her game and kept them in front.

Sacramento were 20-18 better in the third quarter and went on a solid 29-22 run in the last frame but fell short in the end.

The result avenged the 86-65 whipping Sacramento delivered to San Antonio last year in the corresponding Game 1 fixture of the play-offs. (CMC)

San Antonio outlasts Sacramento in OT

By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO — Sophia Young scored 27 points to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars to an 86-81 overtime victory over the Sacramento Monarchs on Monday in the decisive Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals.

San Antonio advances to the West finals for the second consecutive year. The Silver Stars will play on the road Thursday against the winner of the Storm-Los Angeles Sparks series that will be decided tonight at KeyArena.

The Monarchs forced overtime when they rallied from a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit with six minutes left in regulation. Nicole Powell tied the score with 8.5 seconds left after driving past defender Erin Buescher.

Powell scored 21 points and Kara Lawson added 16.

San Antonio's Becky Hammon missed an off-balance shot in the lane that could have won it for the Silver Stars in regulation. Hammon finished with 14 points.

"Offensively, the ball was not always dropping like we would hope, but Sophia put us on her back and really carried this team tonight," Hammon said. "It probably hurts. She's going to need a rubdown later."

San Antonio's 24-10 regular-season record gives it home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
