Sanya Richards (born February 26, 1985 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a track and field athlete who competes internationally for the United States. She was a gold medalist in the 4x400m relay at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Richards left Jamaica for the USA at the age of 12 and became a US citizen in May 2002. At St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, she lettered in basketball in high school and is a member of the National Honor Society, ending her high school academic career with a 4.0 grade point average. In 2002 she was named National High School Female Athlete of the Year, USA Track and Field's Youth Athlete of the Year, and Track and Field News Women's Prep Athlete of the Year.

Richards graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006 with a degree in management information systems. She is a singer and a dancer, regularly putting on shows for family and friends. Since 2007, she has been engaged to current New York Giants cornerback & Super Bowl champion, Aaron Ross. They have been dating since 2003.[1]

She has won a silver medal in the 400 meters at 2005 World Championships in Athletics. In 2006, together with Jeremy Wariner (400 m) and Asafa Powell (100 m) she won her sixth out of six Golden League events (100 m) in the same season, which earned her a total of $250,000. She broke Valerie Brisco-Hooks' US record of 48.83 with a 48.70 at the end of the 2006 season and was named IAAF 2006 Female World Athlete of the Year[2] After failing to qualify for the 400m at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka due to illness which caused her to finish fourth in the US trials, Richards was the favourite to win gold in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and qualified fastest for the final, but went out of the blocks too quickly and was overtaken in the finishing straight by Christine Ohuruogu of Great Britain and Shericka Williams of Jamaica, consigning her to the bronze medal.

Sanya Richards

She's the one: UT runner, family have same goal

08:51 AM CDT on Wednesday, June 9, 2004

By CHIP BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

Shari Richards remembers exactly when her older sister, Sanya, Texas' sophomore sprint sensation, set out on her quest to become the best 400-meter runner in the world.

It was when Shari was assigned Sanya's household chores four years ago so that Sanya could concentrate more on her training.

"Sanya never really cleaned the bathroom that often anyway, so I was already doing that when I inherited the job," Shari joked.

Sanya Richards will have 16 family members in Austin as she attempts to defend her 400-meter title during the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday. Richards, who owns the nation's fastest outdoor 400 time (50.49), will also run the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays for third-ranked Texas.

Her father, Archie, a former soccer player in Jamaica, will be her chief motivator and will supervise the 2,000 abdominal crunches she does daily. Her mother, Sharon, a former high school track champion in Jamaica, will be in charge of her diet. Shari, a freshman at Texas who lives with Sanya, will oversee her sister's water intake – eight 24-ounce bottles a day – and her sleep.

"We try to let Sanya focus on training and running fast," Archie said. "Everything else is on me or her mom."

The Richards family members have reshaped their lives for Sanya in hopes that she will one day dominate the 400 meters – a tortuous sprint with a razor-thin line between success and humiliation.

"If you go out too fast, that grand piano will jump on your back in the final 150 meters," said a smiling Richards, whose long legs make her seem taller than 5-8.

She is a prodigy who didn't know the depths of her talent until her father looked at a program during a track meet in Jamaica, when Sanya was 10, and saw her times were better than some boys her age.

The revelation sent Archie scrambling to research track and field. He began videotaping all of his daughter's races to find ways to improve her form while also studying the flaws of opponents.

When Sanya was 12, Archie and Sharon Richards were convinced their daughter was going to be special in track. They moved from their native Kingston, Jamaica, to the United States in hopes Sanya would be adjusted to America before having her pick of college scholarships.

Shari Richards is attending Texas, in part, to help give Sanya a social life because Sanya doesn't go out at night. She's too focused on getting her eight hours of sleep. Shari also helps monitor her sister's training and reports back to her parents, who live in the South Florida town of Pembroke Pines.

"Her sister sees that she doesn't cheat on her diet," Archie said.

And Sharon Richards has given much more than the shiny, gold bullet Sanya wears on a necklace – a gift in eighth grade to symbolize Sanya's speed. Sharon gave up her Jamaican citizenship in the spring of 2002 and became a U.S. citizen so that Sanya would automatically become a U.S. citizen as her minor child. Sanya was 17 at the time.

"It was a tough decision," said Sharon, a corporate travel counselor for American Express. "I still have family in Jamaica. But we liked the way U.S. Track and Field was treating Sanya and thought it would be best for her to run for the United States."

Said Archie, a real estate investor who is still a Jamaican citizen, "With the opportunities that were being afforded to Sanya by the U.S., she should give back to the U.S."

But for anyone who thinks her family revolves a little to tightly around Richards, think again. That's exactly how Sanya wants it.

Her parents say the only thing they demanded of Sanya growing up was to be a good student. Richards was a member of the National Honor Society in high school and has a 3.3 grade point average at Texas while majoring in management information systems.

"What my family has done for me is healthy," Richards said. "It's never been overbearing. I want to be a name everyone remembers. I want to be the best in the 400, the best anyone's ever seen. To get there, you need help. If you're trying to go it alone, sometimes it's hard to stay motivated."

Sanya agreed with her parents' decision that she become a U.S. citizen. But the decision didn't sit well with some in Jamaica, where track is a way of life, and where Sanya went for the World Junior Championships in July 2002.

"When she got announced the first time at junior worlds as a member of the U.S. team, there were a few who hemmed and hawed and a few boos," said John Guarino, Richards' high school track coach at St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Richards was sluggish and was beaten in the 400 final by Monique Henderson of UCLA, one of her top competitors at this week's NCAA meet.

The experience only seemed to fuel Richards, who capped an astounding freshman season at Texas last year with first-place finishes in the 400 at the NCAAs and the U.S. Championships. She then anchored the gold medal 4x400-meter relay for the United States at the World Championships.

Just a baby
At 19, Richards is a virtual baby in track, a sport where sprinters such as Gail Devers compete at a world-class level into their 30s.

As the reigning American outdoor champion in the 400, Richards hopes this week to break the NCAA outdoor record in the 400 (50.18) and the world junior record (49.42) before attempting to qualify for the Olympics in July and compete for the United States in Athens in August. .

It was all part of a plan her father had for Sanya, dating to her junior year in high school at St. Thomas Aquinas, when Sanya lost a 200-meter race to Arizona's Angel Perkins and decided she would stop at nothing to be the best.

That included increasing a regimen prescribed by her father of 500 abdominal crunches three times a week to 1,000 five days a week. She also did weight workouts with her mother, a former aerobics instructor and gym owner in Kingston., in their garage in Florida.

"I can still hear my father saying, 'If you train like everyone else, you'll be like everyone else,' " said Richards, a devout Christian who attends church on Sunday, even if she arrives home from a meet late Saturday night.

Sharon scrutinizes Sanya's body, especially the abs, and can tell just by looking at her if her daughter is taking in enough protein.

Archie discouraged Sanya from staying out late, calling parties nothing more than "a place where people go to show off" – something she can do when her track career is over.

Sanya is now up to 2,000 ab crunches a day – a commitment that takes up to three hours to complete. It is her advantage, she believes, because her father taught her that strong abdominal muscles lift tired legs at the end of a race.

"My abs are the key," Richards said. "If everyone started doing 2,000 abs a day, I would do 3,000."
