District 9
Saw it Friday. I thought the movie was really sad. It reminded me of The Fly. What so you people? I found it interesting the location of the film and what was going on in that particular location. I don't want to give away too much for those who haven't watched it.

that seems to be the key word to describe it, interesting!. i was kind of bored thru most of it waiting for some action to happen. I had no idea what it was about when i went in so it cought me off guard. i was expecting a horror movie. but very creative and something refreshing fromt the ordinary. it look like they set it up for a part 2 but i probably wont go see it till i get some good reviews on it

This movie caught me by surprise in a good way. It exceeded my expectations because it did not turn out to be your typical Alien invasion movie. I would give it a 3/5.

SOME SPOILERS ***
This was a goodass movie. Lots of great supporting actors but I guess since they didn't have a bigname attached it was no use doing a bunch of promotion or P. R like that brit end of the world movie with Noemie Harris and Cilian Murphy. I didn't know exactly what it was about but I really enjoyed it. I would watch District 10. Its just more fodder to show man really is ignorant and conceited. It emphasises that Biotech & Bioengineering is the next frontier. Wikuss the effin prawn only semi-redeemed himself by the end. Anyone else thought it was crazy Wikuss was in charge? Also I know ppl say languages not easy and I guess they had 20 years but sheesh how dem understand alien so good? Also interesting how they left out the part how Wik and dude actually got to the MNU, MSU? HQ Also have I been watching Am. movies too long aint military HQ and research centers sposed to be in d middle of nowhere vs downtown? Not surprised Peter Jackson had a hand in this. Original all round the writers Neill Blomkamp (from SA most of his work is in visual effects) and Terri Tatchell are on some rhell HEIGHTS!!!!!!!!!! Hollywood is gonna be knocking down their doors.

In the end, they said how the aliens multiplied by like a million or something so, after seeing what happened to wikuss, maybe alot of those 'aliens' were humans at one point.. ![]() What do u think part 2 will be about? Will he come back to save the other aliens? attack us because of how we treated them? or take over earth? ![]()

Where those prawns dregs of society anyway and were being sent to repopulate somewhere else (a la Australia?) Don't know much about the backstory of the game Halo.
Before he reminded me of every mid-level paper pusher / bureaucrat that the higher ups push to the front as the "face of change" simply to be the fall guy when everything turns to shit. Wikus was a simple but smart guy. He knew his job... kinda like an immigration officer all he know is rules, codes, sections and what stuff to look for with the aliens. I was in disbelief when they planned to knock on doors and get the aliens to sign ish to move. His father in law was burying him from day 1. All Wikus wanted was his angel wife, his 2.5 kids, a nice house and respect job & friends. The "incident" turned all that to shit. In his desperation the worst of him truly came out. Before when they were searching the place... i saw him as another white collar asshole puppet.

As part of the marketing campaign in North America, posters were put up in major cities on bus stops, the sides of buildings, etc. designating areas that were restricted for humans only, with a number to call (866.666.6001) in order to report non-humans. The title of the film was generally not included, although the URL address for the film's official website was.
The initial premise of the whole film is based on the Short Film Alive in Joburg (2005), written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, which depicted in a documentary-style the struggles of social interaction between aliens and inhabitants of Johannesburg ("Joburg"), South Africa. The film was based on director Neill Blomkamp's childhood in South Africa during apartheid. Star Sharlto Copley had not acted before and had no intention of pursuing an acting career. He stumbled into the leading role as Neill Blomkamp placed him on-camera during the short film. All of the "prawns" in the film are CGI with the sole exception of the ones on the operating table in the medical lab. All of the speaking aliens were performed by one actor, Jason Cope, who also played the role of the lead alien Christopher Johnson and narrator Grey Bradnam. The dialogue for the speaking aliens was ad-libbed by Cope, and dubbed over in post production. The mutilated animal carcasses in the background of many scenes were real and with only a few exceptions, were already in the real slums and shacks used for the filming. All the shacks in District 9 were actual shacks that exists in a section of Johannesburg which were to be evacuated and the residents moved to better government housing, paralleling the events in the film. Also paralleling, the residents had not actually been moved out before filming began. The only shack that was created solely for filming was Christopher Johnson's shack. The creatures used in the small fighting arena were meant to be rodents/pests which were aboard the ship. The idea of the prawns being obsessed with cat food came from two inspirations. In impoverished areas of Johannesburg, Neill Blomkamp would see people selling cheese poofs and other snack foods out of large 3-foot tall bags and wanted the aliens to have a similar cheap food. The decision to make them cat food came from one of the producers who used canned cat food to bait hooks when fishing for prawns in Vancouver. After the feature film based on the Halo (2001) (VG) video game series which was to be directed by Neill Blomkamp fell through, producer Peter Jackson went to Blomkamp and offered him $30 million to make whatever he wanted. The result was this film. Several Afrikaans curse words can be heard throughout the film, including 'doos' or 'poes' (both of which are slang terms for a vagina), fok/fokken (which means "f**k/f**king"), and 'bliksem' (which is equivalent to "bastard"). Also at some point, a sniper says "Kom na pappa toe", which translates to "Come to daddy". The extremely large sniper rifle used to disable Wikus's armored suit is an actual weapon, the Denel NTW-20 20mm anti-material rifle. Appropriately, it is manufactured in South Africa. Around six different endings were created during filming. Sharlto Copley ad-libbed all his lines. At one point during the raid on the MNU lab, the phrase "TETRA VAAL" can be seen printed in black on a white wall. This is the name of the fictional robotics company in Neill Blomkamp's eponymous short film, also set in Johannesburg. When Wikus is using the alien walker robot, he is seen picking up a pig carcass and launch it with something resembling an anti-gravity gun, a weapon type made widely known through the computer game Half-Life 2 (2004) (VG). The MNU headquarter buildings shown in numerous scenes throughout the film are in reality the Carlton Centre complex belonging to South African state transport company Transnet. The shorter of the two buildings (shaped as an upside down Y) is actually the former Carlton Hotel which was mothballed in 1997 due to low occupancy. The taller structure with the CGI helicopter landing pads and MNU logo on the roof is the primary 50-storey building of the Carlton Centre complex and is known as Carlton Centre which is the tallest building in Africa. A large number of actual South African weapons were used in the film. Quite a few of them were designed by Tony Neophytou and are marketed by Denel. This includes the NTW-20 20mm anti-materiel rifle, white painted CR-21 bullpup assault rifles and a Neopup PAW-20 hand-held grenade launcher. Kobus uses this when he shoots the battle suit in the back. |
