Unpicking locs

I have five year old locs down to the middle of my back

All my peeps with locs....

and was wearing my hair natural for two years before that. I am bored and need a change. I have been dreaming about cutting off my locs. The thing is, I don't want to cut them off completely because I need hair for what ever I plan to do next. I have cut six locs half way so far, up to my shoulder (because I am saving the cut off pieces just in case I plan to loc in the future) and have unpick the loc with a hair pin. However, this is a time consuming, tedious process.

Question - Has anyone here unpick their locs before?

Is there is faster method to using a hair pin (and I don't mean cut them off) - e.g using conditioner or wetting them? I am spending over an hour on each loc.

How long did it take to complete the whole process?

my younger sister did it att the age of thirteen. her and my neice used a comb and god knows what else to take them out. it took them three days and her locks were longggg. mind you her hair was damaged so it took a year for her hair to recover, but her hair is in good shape. i would suggest you cut it

I agree, best to cut and let it grow out fresh.

What I have in mind is a very short hairstyle so most of the damaged hair will be cut off anyway. I just need some hair on top my head so that the stylist can cut it into the style I want. I already called her, she said no worries.

so instead of unpicking it just dont twist it anymore for about a month that should be more than enough for a shot style

*disclaimer-jahtee is totaly against the cutting of the locs*

If you want to go through that I suggest soaking your head (yeah soaking it) in conditioner to let them soften, take some advil, and then unpick them. I have a "sister" who did that, and it took her like 2 days with little to no damage.

Girl I know how you feel, I never thought I would ever do this but my locs just don't look the same as before. Actually both my hair and skin are suffering since having a baby a few months ago. Seems that my harmones still out of wack (She took away all my beauty LOL). I just want to look like me again.

i was in the same boat being bored with my locs and i chopped them off yesterday. i contemplted combing them out, i did one and it took me forever and the ends sem pretty damaged. to me it was not worth the time to sit and comb out so i said fack it, i'm just gonna chop it off and start fresh. if u decide to comb out, i would get a detangler spray like just for me detangler and conditioner spray for kids and saturate your locs with that as well as some conditioner. good luck!
