Shedding

Has anyone heard/experienced their hair shedding from not getting a regular touch-up. I'm about ten week post relaxer and my hair is shedding real bad even after i wash and deep condition it.

Do keep in mind that our hair has a shedding cycle. However, to minimize shedding I advise you do the following:

1. Use a conditioner with garlic. I swear by Alter Ego Garlic Treatment which drastically helped my hair from shedding when I was relaxed.

2. Protein! Your hair may also be shedding because of the harsh chemicals used when relaxing. Protein helps strengthen the hair strands and as such, helps minimize shedding caused by breakage/damage. My favorite protein treatments are Nexxus Emergencee and Aubrey Organics Glycolic Balancing Conditioner. Depending on your location, you can get this at your Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or CVS/Rite Aid.

3. Whenever you deep condition, add protein, or use a conditioner with protein as one of its main ingredients. Popular protein ingredients for hair include: Keratin, Animal Protein, Hydrolyzed Protein, Wheat Protein, Fatty Acids, etc.

4. Lastly, the more you touch up, the more your hair will be susceptible to damage/breakage/shedding. Remember, relaxer is a chemical and it breaks down the molecules of already fragile hair. I would recommend going natural, but, if you plan on sticking to relaxing, relax every 3 months, if you can, 4 times at most per year. Your hair will thank you.

Good luck!

My hair always sheds more when it's time for a touch up. I've always heard touching your hair to often, is just as harmful as not touching it up enough. But they say so much when it comes to hair care. that what might work for one may not necessarily work for the other. If it's time and you don't plan to grow out the perm then you know what to do...

I'm going through a similiar situation. But was I'm doing is coming across some really nice curly fro wig that look similiar to the way singer Kelis used to wair her hair. I've recieved soooo many compliments from it. Plus it gave my hair a break from the cold weather and has eased my pockets from hair appts.
