I wasted money on textures and tones the other day. My hair was dyed jet black and I had virgin roots, only the roots took the dye. I know now that I have to use something stronger if I wanna go from jet black to a brighter color.

When I had my locs I used to use Clairol Textures and Tones to color them...I got great color...but I used to keep it in long, and do stuff...like dishes, straighten up and ting...

The one thing to remember about permanent dyes is that it will dry your hair a lot...Condition your hair often to prevent breakage.

Libra, you have to lift your hair first if you're going from jet black to a brighter color. I know you probably weren't trying to be blonde though hmmmm (thinking of what color to try, what color did you use?).

I did the bleach thing twice....I'm afraid It was an auburnish colour.

I used this brand when I had my locs and it came out really nice, it's specifically for dark hair only, and u have to mix it with the developer.

wait another 3 weeks, doing protein (I have the GVP Joico K-Pak reconstructor) and following up with a moisturizing conditioner. That should at least prep your hair for the lifting. Good luck
*I know most of this stuff b/c this is all my bff talk about with her hair, she had a bad bleach job at her school (she's going to hair school). She did hot oil treatments, protein and moisturizing deep conditioners. They're used to doing bleaching on black girls (she's Ukranian), so they kept the bleach in too long.

you could always use the aphogee 2-step protein treatment, and they have them at sally's in the one time pack for like $3. I use this Generic Value Products - GVP Hair Reconstructor: Compare to Joico K-Pak as my weekly treatment since I'm transitioning. It's cheaper than the original Joico K-Pak reconstructor, which is over $15 (I end up saving about $10-11). Just make sure to follow up with a good moisturizing conditioner like the hydrating balm (also bought the GVP brand). I did buy the actual Matrix Biolage Hydrating Balm for coarse hair, and it was $18 (yeah never again lol). Now if you want to do it yourself, get some suave humectant conditioner, add a lil' castor oil, and egg you've got a homemade protein conditioner. Have sit for 25 mins with cap under the dryer (or 1hr w/o heat), rinse and follow with a regular rinse out conditioner (or add castor oil let it sit and rinse). Do this like 2x a month, and your hair should be fine within two months. Also did you get a trim?

*I bought this before, and my cosmetologist friend recommends it Aphogee - ApHogee Intensive Two Minute Keratin Reconstructor

Do simple color rinses like Jazzing and Beautiful Collections dry your hair also?

nope, they're just semi-permanent/rinses...so nothing that will change the structure of your hair like permanent colors.

wouldn't dying natural hair damage it alot? i would think that natural hair is already dry so putting a bleaching agent on it would strip it even more....

How about highlighting? i think that would be best because it brightens your hair and look without damaging all your hair.

I dyed my whole head twice in my life. Once professionally and the second time i did it myself. The second time caused me to chop all my hair off because 4-5 months into my new color, my hair broke off severely. I washed it all the time and used all kinds of moisturizers and conditioners but my hair would always stay brittle and dry.

For Highlighting, i used African Pride Hi-Lites. It has step by step instructions and the colors are nice for our skin. At first i wasn't sure if i liked the results when i did it, but now i love it!

It doesn't matter if it's natural or not, actually it's worse for relaxed hair since it doesn't have that much moisture to begin with. That's why it is recommended that you do protein and deep conditioning treatments. Highlighting still involves bleaching, just not the entire head.
