Fashion Questions....
1. Is being a rasta style and fashion now a days?
I can't see a real rasta empress wearing any of the bathing suits in this post Calling all my Rasta Sistren 2. Why do women pluck off all of their eyebrows and draw them back in or dye them some hideous color? 3. Why so some women dye their hair the same color as Kool Aid and think it's sexy? aren't you afraid of leaving a colored puddle wherever you go? plus don't you know these chemicals sink into your brain and make you stupid or sick? |

Being a rasta man/woman is a spiritual movement. Now, having dreads can either be a fashion or once again a spiritual movement. You are right, a real rasta empress will not wear those bathing suits due to her spirituality and her religious beliefs. Just because someone one is wearing the Ethopian colors doesnt necessarily mean they are a rasta. I have the belt with the lion of Judah and thought to myself the same thing "Should I wear this even though I am not a rasta?". I am a black woman. That explains it all!
I dont know why some women pluck off their eyebrows and draw them back on. And as for coloring their hair a different color is their preference. Regardless if someone knows something is bad for them, they still want to do it. Do you smoke? Do you drink? Do you have pre-martial sex? Those are bad things and we all do it regardless of the circumstances. |

i am a real rasta i wear whatever i want to, i no longer follow the dictates of anyone. did the whole covering the body thing, and i feel that i was beautifully and wonderfully made so why should i need to cover up myself. every thing in excess is bad, i dont think that looking or feeling sexy is against rastafari. living an unrighteous life, running around passing judgement, etc, etc....however IS against it. |

Welcome calle to the Imix InVogue forum, so let's see how I can add my opinion to your questions:
1. Is being a rasta style and fashion now a days? Is being a rasta a style and fashion now a days?? Ummm I think the culture has been a style and fashion since the days of Bob and Peter Tosh. They had the red/gold/green socks, the buttons, the shirts with badges, rasta caps, and we can go on and on. The music also made awareness of the culture and many admired it. Also red/gold/green stands for some cultures as in the flag representation. I'm from Grenada, and I've always worn the colors of the flag since I was a child and also my father grew us up in a household where not only calypso/soca was being played but also reggae (culture) and what that represented people admired. If we're looking at Pop Culture, like Gwen Stefani from No Doubt who started out as Ska-band, the reggae culture is something I can see as an influence to her style and the style of her fashion line. Then we have people like Christian Dior and other following fashion.... I can't see a real rasta empress wearing any of the bathing suits in this post http://www.islandmix.com/backchat/s...ad.php?t=105270 hmmm... That's interesting... Well reading this article here: Roles of women The women in Rastafari are normally referred to as Queens. Many of the Rastafarian marriages are informal (common law). Even though things are changing, originally a woman's role in the Rastafarian sect is basically regulated to housekeeping, childrearing and to pleasing her King. A Rastafarian woman is a Queen and must keep different standards than the women in "Babylonial" society or Western culture. Some of the standards include, no make up, no dressing in short skirts and they cannot use chemicals in their hair. Many Rastafarian women cannot use any form of birth control, as it is not natural and also seen as a Euro-centric way to control the African population. Rastafarian women are expected to nurture the community but know her place. The Bobo Shanti order is the strictest when it comes to the role of women, as they adhere to the strict bible principles of the Old Testament. Abortion is also not an option for Rastafarian women as it is seen as murder as in many other world religions. Women play a very secondary role in the sect and are to stand by their King. I can see this as what the standards are in the rastafarian culture but again this can be up for questioning to a woman who is rasta and chooses to wear that bathing suit in question. I believe it's all about her beliefs what she chooses. Is it right?! That's between her Creator and faith. 2. Why do women pluck off all of their eyebrows and draw them back in or dye them some hideous color? I don't know why they do it, but I can say I wax mine for shape! |
