marina ama omowale maxwell. its a magical realism novel set during the Trinidad black power movement in the 70's. Basicly at the beginning this girl is "visited" (most erotic visitation I ever read) and becomes an orisha devotee so the elders instruct her that her path is go to POS (she lives in a lil village in toco). The rest of the story deals with the happenings in POS of the black power struggle, carnival and the release it brings (another extremely erotic part), her relationships with males which reflect all the m/f issues specific to the windies including the issues faced by afro/indo couples esp back then. While its telling all this, she is "finding herself" within the orisha path, but the author uses her as a symbol for the people, so Trinidad is finding itself at the same time. Not an easy book to describe and I can't do it justice but its excellent.
