STOP THE SOCA/CALYPSO vs REGGAE/DANCEHALL WARS

STALIN - is big news in land of reggae Jamaica
By David Millette (Editor) email: davidmillette@tntmirror.com

THE news is out. Yes, almost from the horses mouth has come word that Black
Stalin is big news in sister CARICOM country, Jamaica, a place reputed to
be anti-Calypso, and in love only with its own music. "Stalin is big news
in Jamaica, man," gushed internationally acclaimed Jamaican reggae artiste
Freddie McGregor. McGregor will be in TnT this weekend, to be part of the
Living Legends Concert at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain, which
also features fellow Jamaican reggae stars Bunny Wailer and Gregory
Isaac.Black Stalin is the sole Trini artiste who will be performing at the
concert, forcing some to wonder if it is being held in the wrong
country.During a live interview from Jamaica on CT Vibes 105FM last week
Friday, McGregor responded with unrestrained enthusiasm when told that
Stalin was one of the artistes also billed to appear at the concert.

"Nuff respect for Stalin," McGregor stated effusively, as he heaped praise
on the many-times calypso monarch.
"We like him in Jamaica; Stalin is big news in Jamaica, man." McGregor
almost couldn't contain his joy about the news of Stalin's presence at the
concert. McGregor, a Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and producer, who
has just released his latest album, Comin' in Tough, added: "I no longer
speak of Jamaican music. "I speak of Caribbean music. "The Caribbean is a
big market. "We won't need the USA just now." In the same vein, he
expressed joy that Kevin Lyttle had made an international breakthrough for
calypso. "I like that for Lyttle," he continued. McGregor added: "I look
forward to coming to TnT." About the concert, which is organised by the
Emancipation Support Committee and Tristar Promotions, McGregor stated: "My
only problem is whether I can sing all my songs that my fans would want to
hear." Some of his latest hits are Lock Dem Down and Bangarang, while his
"oldies" include Push Come to Shove, Africa Here I Come, Just Don't Want To
Be Lonely, I Was Born A Winner, Guantanamera and Big Ship.

sorry but i dont feel the two musics mix
as well as the crowds that listen to the music

Just wondering if anyone ever went to one of theose soca vrs reggae or jamacia vrs tnt parties?
If so how did they go down?

Me personally dont see die hard soca lovers and die hard reggae lovers in the same party.
maybe the casual music lover who listens to all things but thats about it the hardcore fans wont mix.

I get the feeling that in Jamaica - lovers of conscious reggae would probably appreciate calypsonians like Stalin, Valentino, Chalkdust etc. These guys came out around the times of revered artistes like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Burning Spear. They were all singing about social consciousness and upliftment of black people.

I am so glad you pointed that out…your statement is on point...it always amaze me the shallow thinking of some of the ppl on Imix to think that everyone is so immature and unruly where in a musical setting they can’t appreciate other forms of music or they can’t co-exist in a musical setting !

As if the hard core Bounty crowd is a big McGregor fan !
As if the hard core Bunji crowd is a big Stalin fan !

Much less know who McGregor or Stalin are...

It just amaze me the lack of depth from some of these ppl on here !
