Is soca turning into dancehall reggae?

with 15 artists jumping on the same riddim and artists voicing 100 songs a year and dj's pulling up tunes its seems as if soca is slowly but surely morphing into dancehall reggae!

Well, I dont have to lament about soca dj's pulling up tunes out here in the LA area because the're aint no active soca dj's out here. But personally, I'm not fond of that dj style of playing music and prefer that the songs play out...thats just one of the things I have always liked about soca.

Hopefully, ragga soca won't take over the genre and will be able to co-exist as a sub-genre of calypso/soca. I certainly can live with that since Im a big reggae/dancehall fan as well.

However, if the Eastern Caribbean is gonna insist on embracing dancehall, especially outside of carnival, its better that the local artists get in on the action in the form of ragga soca rather then let the Jamaicans steal all the business and thunder with their form of dancehall.

Ideally, I would like to see ragga soca occupy about 20% of the genre...if it becomes 50 to 90% of the soca that would suck, big time. We already have a ton of dancehall music out there now, but hey, in the end the consuming public will decide.

Hey in the end its the consumer who makes the decision. That just a sign that soca is fast losing ground to the more popular genre of dancehall.

It's similar, but I'd say it's not really turning into dancehall. Some elements like riddems are being used but other than that I disagree.

I think based on 2004 DANCEHALL REGGAE SUCKS RIGHT NOW. The big artists that are out there weren't good at all to me, they were just one bag of hype, and there were too many dancing tunes. Soca right now as of last year and Trini carnival is booming. Lots of big tunes, lots of artists, and lots more island integration. If it wasn't for Barbados soca sucking last year (yeah, minus Sugar Cane ( which was a remake ), What Happens in the Party, Lil, Rick, and um, um, maybe Alison Hinds song, that is my opinion, please Barbados come through this year, Xfyah, don't let me down) soca would have had a phenomenal year.

If soca starts being about modeling, posing, no dancing, slowing down the music, forwarding, wearing tight pants and a pink shirt and dancing and prancing around with other men doing the 'flowers ah bloom' while calling everybody else a battyboy, and not smiling, then it will be dancehall.

Right now soca seems to be booming in my opinion.

Dancehall definitely is sounding more like Soca musically. It got real fast. But they'll be a definite backlash.

Bunji Garlin sounds Like who......?????

Is Soca as hot as IT used to be? 95-2001. I live in Brooklyn so my opinion might not count, but I'm sure we hear all the hits.

Like it or not ALL The so-called genres are borrowing from each other. Either we learn to CONTROL IT, so that we (Caribbean islands) can benefit monetarily, or keep complaining and cut each other's throat.

Can't we all just get along?
