time for him to give the crown over
the man aint had a song/hit in years i would
think it more appropriate to call him
"the first" or the inventor so to speak
but not the calypso king of the world
as if he is still producing new calypso hits

The man has a great legacy that no one has been able to surpass as of yet. Who should claim the title if not him then?

he as well as many others have a great
legacy not going to mention them
to get into any debate, but i believe
its time to crown a new king....
not down playing his legacy or his accomplishments
but when someone is referred to as "King" it kind of gives
the impression that he is the one "reigning" right now which is not the case

Who do you recommend? Not an argument per say more than at this point Sparrow can walk on a stage and sing Jimmy Crack Corn and make the crowd go wild. Not many people can do that. And no Calypsonians have are that close IMHO.

I think he was given the title on the strenght of his dominance in the major competitions within the genre...I believe he's won more "Calypso Monarch" titles than anyone else so the crown in indisputably his to wear.

In my mind though...I'm kinda partial to Kitch, not really sure why, I think he was just more creative than Sparrow. The thing about Kitch that probably escaped most people was the fact that he was an intellect...and had an obviously quick wit. Sparrow may have mastered the raunchy double-entendre, but Kitch was master of the understated.

I could not agree more, especially with the double-entendre...

Kitch was a boss for melodies and pan though....and a road march king as well...

Kitch definitely, David Rudder, (he's great) he may not
have the ranchiness down (then again he had "lady
shelia" ) well the other people i have in mind
may not really be considered "Calypso Kings" but
more like "Soca Kings" Rupee, Mr Montano, Bunji
and Ms. Hinds, Maximus although I think with time
he'll be even better

Sparrow is given this status because no one has done the thing for as long and as well as he has since its inception. Overall Sparrow has been the best ever in the genre....and he deserves the title.

To me the other person who comes close is rudder. I can't think of another calypsonian today who can command a stage like Rudder can. To me a great calypsonian not only has great tunes for fetes but also has songs that you can listen to when you reading your newspaper and sipping your coffee on a sunday morning. Both Rudder and Sparrow have much music like that in their catalogue.

The funny thing is that it wasn't to long ago that i got turned on to the older calypsoes especially songs by sparrow, kitch, rudder and them fellas and i'm ashamed to say that after being born and bred in tnt land it took coming to the states for me to really become a fan of the genre.

You know I think you're right. I don't think I've heard anyone close to David Rudder. He is just differnt from everybody else. "Sweet Sweet TNT" still sweet up to now. It's as if he just released it. But I love that new jam from Sparrow too "Please Tell Me Why" or something like that. Is that the correct name of the song?
