Soca artists who have done a recording under...

..an American and/or International Label:

Arrow-Mango/Island Records

Burning Flames-Mango/Island Records

Kevin Lyttle-Atlantic Records

Rupee-Atlantic Records

KMC-Sequence Records

Now I think there might be a few others, like Byron Lee under Mango/Islands Records also but not sure.

The man who TOP them all.....the MAN who STARTED the TREND.....you KNOW how we VINCIES do it. Yes, the one and ONLY Alston 'Becket' Cyrus. He did it with "DISCO CALYPSO" for CASABLANCA RECORDS in 1977.

Yes, when you RENT the movie "The DEEP" with Jacqueline Bissett(sp) and Robert Shaw....uhm....I believe Louis Gossett Jr. was in it too...you will hear that song.

Moreover, his album "DISCO CALYPSO" in 1977 was RELEASED by CASABLANCA RECORDS.

Also, "TEASER" was RELEASED by POLYDOR in EUROPE.

Of course, Jamesy P was signed to MINISTER OF SOUND/EMI RECORDS in EUROPE and UNIVERSAL RECORDS in NORTH AMERICA when he came out with the BOOM CHUNE NOOKIE.

So you see, VINCY set the TREND....we OPENED the DOOR for OTHERS to FOLLOW.

Ohhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhh

I'm not sure if this applies or not...but Putumayo has a number of music compilations that consist of music from Africa, Caribbean, Folk, or other World Music. There are a number of soca artistes on these compilations from over the years.

A double LP that solidified my interest in soca was This Is Soca
which was released by Sire Records in 1987.

The first record was a full album by David Rudder and Charlie's
Roots entitled Calypso. The second was a various artists compilation
The Soca Hits of 1987 and featured Gypsy, Stalin, Shadow, Scrunter,
Duke and Baron to name a few.

I couldn't find a link to the Sire catalogue online, so here's a link
to a listing on eBay:THIS IS SOCA David Rudder Charles Roots Calypso
2-LP's - (eBay item 280167804444 end time Nov-04-07 15:28:42 PST)

Though releasing much more calypso than soca, Eddy Grant's
Ice Records had good international distribution because of his
name recognition. I know the label was caught up in some
legal issues, but to me Ice Records was a great source of older
calypso recordings.
