Small islands? Big islands? Hahahaha!

Can some members please inform me what islands are "Little" and what islands are "big" I getting confused cause last time I check on the map all dem islands was small to me except Cuba, Hispanola, and Jamaica. Yes some are bigger than others but dem comparing a small island with a smaller island. I get so confuse when people say Burning Flames is the best small island band. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? So who is the best big island band? Or people in here separating small island music with smaller ones? hahhhahahaahhahaha!

Yea, it's a lot more prudent for us to talk about Leeward islands as opposed to Windward Islands, because that's usually what people actually mean. No one says 'small islands' and then include Grenada, when they are the same size as the so-called small islands.

Good point harizon. Leh we all work to done this big-small island talk, it not making sense t'all. Leeward/Windward thing from now on (or as I like to say, "Southern Caribbean vs. everybody else") :p

Although this post has some relevance here in soca chat, it might be better to have it in Backchat or even real talk.....I dunno, just a passing thought, uh oh, i think i'm rambling now :p

I does get confused wit that too. With the exception of Cuba, Hispanola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), Puero Rico and Jamaica they are all small islands. Most of the Islands are so small that you could fit a few of them together and they won't equal one average size U.S. state.

well, if you are talking about the greater antillies, those are Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti/Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, everything else is considered the smaller islands, or at least that's how they taught me in school. So, to answer your question, every island other than those mentioned above are considered to be small islands. Now, if we are talking music sense, then that's a different story.

I think when people say "small island big island" they are not including Cuba, Hispanola (D.R. & Haiti) or Puerto Rico. Do they have soca bands in those countries? If they do please let us know. I have people from Jamaica tell me about thier "small" island and I say if Jamaica is "small" then what's Trinidad?

Like MysticReveller said it's more pruddent to say Winward/Leeward islands...if you want to be politically correct. But I personally don't think any bad blood is meant when people say "Small island /Big island"

Back home we have calypso bands, but no soca, spanish reggea, and spanish dancehall (if you wanna call it that). Then we have the bands that the island is known for, the salsa bands, and the merengue bands. So, we have a large mix of genres of music there, but no soca.

I believe it's meant in the music sense.

I've heard a few soca songs sung in spanish and it sounds pretty cool.

I thought it was a popularity thing. Islands like trinidad, Jamaica, Haiti were consisdered big Island. And island like Genada, St. Vincent, Antigua...... were considered small island. Thats based upon the response I get from people when I say I Rep. Grenada. And those beneath me resonse come from fellow Trini's and Jamaicans.

They make me feel small lol!!!
