The Ragga Soca Problem Anomaly

What is it?

Reggeaton has the exact same beat as Ragga soca, some Ragga soca songs could very well be Samba. If ragga soca is soca mixed with dancehall, then what is dancehall mixed with soca, what is the Global Riddim? And what about the old dub songs from Bim and probably other islands that released exactly as is today would be called ragga soca. What about songs that are called Ragga soca but if release outside of Crop Over/Carnival would be called dancehall/R&B.

What about soca songs with a clear J'can influence that are 160 BPM? Or slow R&B influenced soca. Then there is African music.

This is what I love about Ragga Soca. It is a post-genre style (yes I know that that is an oxymoron). There is no country of origin, everyone has a different spin on it. And lastly, the only thing that really matters is? Does it sound good, does it move me?

u make some excellent points. for example, just de other day i happened to see a shelly tundah video, and if dat song was released today it would be call a soca song.the beat - everything about dat song ooze soca.

if u notice, a lot uh de dancehall songs today are much faster dan dancehall songs from ten to fifteen year ago. sometimes i get confuse -- i dont know if those songs are dancehall or soca -- when i listen to songs from artists like elephant man, vegas, tok, and few others.
