Kees Dieffenthaller takes the plunge into soca

With seven Ones in CXC, two As and two Bs at A’Levels in sciences, a 1,380 scholastic aptitude test score, you’d think of a young Einstein, right?

Instead he sings the latest soca hits in front of thousands at the many party hot spots around.

Kees Dieffenthaller, frontline singer with the band Imij and Company, is quite modest, much of which he attributed to his upbringing.

“I grew up in Palmiste in south. Not much of a social life, so you went to church, made real friends and studied real hard,” he said.

How does a half-white, staunch Catholic, ex-Pres boy, straight ‘A’ student change to a dreadlocked soca singer?

“Music is a bug you cannot ignore,” Dieffenthaller said. “My family has always been involved in Carnival.”

He admitted that his hair brought a lot of changes and allowed him to reflect on his life.

“The hair is all part of my spirituality. It changed my concept on a lot of things; it even changed my diet,” he said.

Kees, an optimist, takes everything as a sign. He wanted to study veterinary medicine, but for the moment, wants to fly the soca flag high.

“I believe that everything that happens in life does so for a reason, so I accept everything with a smile,” he said.

His family is very supportive.

“They have been great about the hair and the music especially.”

This was Imij and Company’s second Carnival and it took a while for other bands and the public to respect them.

“We were considered to be of a lighter shade and that we do not know about soca and that we can’t sing soca, but this year, other bands actually limed with us,” he said.

He remembered his last performance with the late Andre Tanker at Mad Hatters Ball.

“I grew up on Tanker and it was a pleasure working with him. Every time I performed with Andre, it was amazing. He was one of the men I looked up to in the business.”

Dieffenthaller sang with the now defunct band, Klas, alongside Miss Trinidad and Tobago/Universe Faye Alibocus.
