maybe it makes sense to just throw Susie from Kansas in the latrine pit and mash up the place on Carnival Monday and Tuesday with women who love uptempo soca- and not worry about what Susie from Kansas thinks

True lover of the music wish Susie from Kansas well but would be more worried about the music resonating with them than with susie. Sure they would like to have susie like the music too but the paramount concern of true soca fans is whether or not they feel the music.

Once again, a big hit which crosses over from a niche genre does not mean that particular song is new or fresh or innovative. The Macarena was a monstrous hit for a couple of clowns from south america but i'm sure if you ask south american musicians if that song was innovative, new and fresh, they will tell you absolutely not.

I beleive Soca artists need to learn what sounds to take from Dance Hall and Hip Hop otherwise they just sound like posers. In general there is a lack of grit and rawness that Soca has and i think most artists percieve that and try to bring that, but fail simply becuae they don't posses it.

And another thing. Soca needs to encorporate other genres. Zouk and Kompas Samba and Axe. They should be marketing to large carnival markets like Brazil, Colombia, France and Central America as opposed to the US. They'll definitely be better off for it.

Dem Bahians done teif we tings and calling it Axe. We should giddem de Dub I (W.I.) wine.
Axe is really yoruba music, primarily the ijexa riddem mixed with reggae and some other Caribbean styles. I have some Bloco Afro from the 1980s by Ile Aiye and Ara Ketu and its pure Afro Brasillian, pure roots.
