Jumbie jumps ahead, leads road march.

Jumbie' jumps ahead

Machel leads Road March race

Kimberly Mackhan and Wayne Bowman

HANDS FULL: Soca artiste Machel Montano HD is flanked by two masqueraders from Island People's Sahara on Park Street, Port of Spain, yesterday.

Machel Montano's "Jumbie" led the race yesterday for the National Road March title.

On his trail as the Parade of the Bands took off in Port of Spain was Shurwayne Winchester's "Open the Gate".

Montano led the contest at the Queen's Park South parade of the bands.

His track also surged ahead at the Piccadilly on the Greens and Downtown judging points.

Celebrating his 25th anniversary in the music business, Montano's "Jumbie" was among the most played songs in the past few weeks leading up to Carnival.

Written by Montano and Kernal Roberts, son of late legend Lord Kitchener, "Jumbie" was well-received with masqueraders and revellers as they jumped and bumped in the streets

From all indications, it seemed that Montano was well poised to retain the Road March title as the parade of the bands continues today.

Winchester's "Open The Gate" gave the "Jumbie" some competition earlier yesterday, but once things heated up, Montano sped away to take the lead and maintained it through the rest of the day.

Montano released "Jumbie" late in the season, just roughly three weeks ago, and during that time the song quickly became the frontrunner, leaving even Montano's other contenders, "Higher Than High" and his duet with Patrice Roberts entitled "Light It Up", in the shade.

Other songs that were considered to be in the running included "My Land" by Nadia Batson and Kees Deiffenthaller and reigning International Power Soca Monarch Iwer George's "Fete After Fete", which did not seem to be on play lists yesterday.

I feel you, if they only knew that machel & kernel was gonna write and produce this chune I bet they probably woulda give up since last year. all they did was waste pen and paper, in trinidad the best chune usually blast everything else outta the sky, hence the reason machel is in the forefront.

DIp in de center do de jumbie dance. 2222222

I said the same thing from the first time i heard the track, i'm tired of shurwayne winchester anyways i think he coulda come hotta this year, actually i thought he had another road march contender to pull outta he hat - but seems like he thought open de gate would do it.

I really thought that M.A.S was very good competition for jumbie but seems like jumbie scare all ah de competition away everybody running from de jumbie.

Its not for nothing...
I don't understand why the general public doesn't get tired of the same people winning all the time whether they deserve to or not.. most of the artists who "win" only do so because they are the so called "money-makers".. Machel could sing.. ta-ta is ta ta and it woulda win roadmarch because is he..
Don't get me wrong.. he is talented and entertaining.. but there are other artistes out there whose music is just as good if not better in some cases!
I played mas last year, and when B.O.T.Y. played at first people in the section were jumpin up.. then by the umpteenth time they were just chippin'.. then when other tunes were play ie) Ting 4 D Road (which in my opinion shoulda been road march..no samples there ) the section went crazzzzzzzzzzzzy!! But Mista Vybe wasn't a "known" name last year and therefore gets shafted.. as well as a lot of other artistes..
someone said yesterday that that is why Maxi.. H2O Phlo and a good few others don't compete due to the unfairness of the competition..
I also think the location of the stages with the exception of the Grand Stage should be a secret.. that way the dj's can't manipulate what tune to play. I believe it is that way on other islands...
Anyhow..

Enjoy yuh carnival Tuesday... I'm sure Machel ready to buff an shine he vehicle already..

Well they have been play other songs it's that jumbie is liked my many people I can say that because I hear the other songs it's just not played when they cross the stage that is all...... Really if open d' gate was written differently it may have won. Also if M.A.S was put out earlier then that would have won.

Yuh could have ten blind judges sitting in the judging booth and when the votes are tally jumbie will still win road march.

There is other artist that has good chunes but hands down jumbie is a giant chunee, shurwayne winchester need to go back to the drawing board and pull something other than those chunes he been coming out with, from since look the band coming shurwayne been sounding the same every year - so did machel for a while also, since then he pulled his self together and came out for his 25th anniversary this year wid a bang, this year is machel year.

If machel didn't stop competing in fantastic friday years ago I believe he might of had a chance of winning the 2k7 crown. IMO

I am not surprised by this. The minute I heard jumbie for the first time, I knew it was going to be a mega hit.

What do you mean if they deserve to win or not? that doesn't make any sense whatsoever, if a song deserve to win then that song/artist should be granted the crown. so then it would be ok if jumbie was sung by another soca artist other than Mr Machel Montano and won road march.
