Thumbs up Elvis White?

Ever heard of this Soca Band, Elvis White. Sounds like they're doing things. Record deal, Touring with Keith Sweat, K-Ci & JoJo etc. Big up, and Congrats to them! It's strange though...it seems that there are so much other bands and artists in the caribbean that we don't hear about, or are even recognised.

To all the unrecognised, underrated bands, artists...keep doing your thing. Don't give up!

Musical destiny

With a name like Elvis White, a career in music was inevitable for the native of the Caribbean island of Montserrat. White, whose mother named him for her favorite singer, and his red-hot soca band will help get the crowd warmed up for Sweat's headlining set on Saturday.

"I always wanted to do this, to be a singer and performer," White said in a phone interview.

White's ambitions were furthered by his mentor, soca legend the Mighty Arrow, best known for his hit "Hot, Hot, Hot."

"I met him when I was about 18 years old," White said. "Arrow took me out of Montserrat on a tour, and it was my first time being off the island.

"He's such a great guy and a great performer. He has inspired me so much. Without Arrow, I wouldn't be doing what I do."

White's band, which bears his name, recently released its debut CD, "Promise." It contains an upbeat mix of pure soca grooves, hip-hop rhymes, dance-hall rhythms and sweet island soul.

"Soca is the soul of all we do," said vocalist Arturo "Toro" George. "It's a nice blend of calypso, reggae and dance hall."

George, a barber by trade, met White while cutting the latter's hair.

"I used to always tell him that I wanted to sing," George recalled. "He would say, 'Yes, whenever you're ready.'

"So I came to the band (rehearsal) room one day and the rest was history. (White's) voice is like dark chocolate and it needed something to soften it a little. The very first time we sang together, we knew that this was the combination."

White, George and the rest of the band bring more than just musical savvy to the stage.

"In the islands, it's all about working hard," said George, who hails from tiny Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. "We've got that island blood in us, so we're always trying to do better."

That work ethic extends to the vibe the group creates in performance.

"It's all about love, happiness and keeping the people dancing," White said. "That's what we're out here to do. Out shows are about dancing from beginning to end."

Elvis White performs at Beacon Theater in NYC

The BVI’s Own Elvis White For Beacon Theater Performance

CaribPR, ATLANTA, GA, Mon. July 11, 2005: ELVIS WHITE, the British Virgin Islands band formerly known as Frontline, is set to play New York City’s Beacon Theater on Friday July 15, as part of their first U.S. tour.

The group, recently signed to the newly-formed Atlanta-based 17.20 Records, an entity of Jeremiah International, LLC, owned by Atlanta entrepreneur Terry K. Johnson, will open twenty-one dates on the U.S. Summer Sweat Tour, featuring R&B’s legendary Keith Sweat and special guests K-Ci & JoJo.

The tour begins in Jacksonville at the Florida Theatre and wraps up in mid-September at the Riverside Theatre in Milwaukee.

ELVIS WHITE has been treating their fans to great music for over 7 years. They have performed for celebrity audiences including Bruce Willis, Demi Moore, Mariah Carey and many others.

Celebrities such as guitarist Jeff Beck and Harry Connick, Jr. have also “sat in” and played with ELVIS WHITE on occasion. Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin empire and owner of Necker Island – a private resort in the BVI, enjoys ELVIS WHITE also. So much so, that he flew the entire band to England to perform for the 5 day Virgin mega party with over 60,000 in attendance.

“ELVIS WHITE is one of the most exciting groups in Soca Music. Now the world is about to experience one of the true musical gems of the Caribbean,” said Branson.

ELVIS WHITE is named after the band’s lead singer, who’s distinctive voice earned him a spot early on in his career as the opening act for the King of Soca – The Mighty Arrow, who’s song, “Hot, Hot, Hot,” became Soca’s first international hit .

Recorded in Atlanta, at Tree studios, and produced by Atlanta production duo Donald Parks (Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Toni Braxton, Bobby Brown) and John Howcott (Keith Sweat, The Braxtons, Chante Moore, Silk, Vanessa Williams), ELVIS WHITE’s new CD, PROMISE, combines a myriad of musical styles, including R&B, Pop, dancehall, techno and club. The ground-breaking CD delivers a refreshingly different, cross cultural, exciting musical adventure inside the world of Soca music.

PROMISE, includes standout tracks; “Sexy Waist,” “Don’t Break My Heart,” and “Teasin Me” and “I Promise You,” the title track and first US single. It features Universal/SRC recording star AKON and is slated to head to US radio by late July.

The group also launched their new website, www. Elviswhite.com, a state of the art site with full flash capabilities allowing the freedom of layout and motion that will separate the website from the masses and create a unique experience for the viewer. The site will feature current news items, photos and media, a media player and a message board where visitors can chat about the music, the tour and everything ELVIS WHITE!
