does Jamaica have soca artists?

xcluding Bryon Lee and the occasional reggae/dancehall acts that release a soca tune.

i know the country had a good handful of calypsonians in the earlies, but r there any local acts trying 2 make it big or just singing soca on a consistent basis in JA. would luv 2 hear the material.

n e info. would be appreciated.

I'm sure there's more, but the one I know of is Fab Five. They are both consistent and talented with their music, and hearing them in interviews a couple of times they believe in quality music.

You'd probably only remember them from "Good Buddy" ( every woman deserve a good buddy )...but they have a lot of good stuff.

I don't really know of any soca people, perse -- there's a couple local artists but no one that has great popularity that hasn't already been mentioned....calypso is a little easier.

Someone mentioned Fab 5, which I believe is the most notorious Calypso band in JA that does their own stuff (I think they have over 21 albums). Some of their songs you might have heard "mainstream" are:

Yuh Safe, All Night Party, Good Buddy, Feeling Horny, Ring Road Jam, Jamaican Woman and Don't Wear None.

But they also started as a ska band. There have been a few who've tried the soca/calypso stuff, had a couple good hits, but didn't make any long term impression to make a career out of it Lovindeer (the first reggae artist to perform at Trinidad Carnival) and Admiral Bailey are the two that come directly to mind.

The older stuff, is a little bit grayer because there is really a lot of confusion (even among Jamaicans) between calypso and mento . Mento artists like Lord Flea, Count Premier and Lord Libby have very strong calypso influences in their music, so it's difficult to tell where the mento stops and the calypso begins.

The only person that I can say from the older group that does original authentic calypso where there's no confusion is Lord Creator, but his situation is a little like Sparrow's with the migration (i.e. he was born in Trinidad, but moved to JA when he was about 9 years old), but I don't know where he identifies as "home".

thx all 4 the responses!

topclass was correct in going over some of the calypso's from artists such as Lord Flea, Creator and a couple others.

i have a lil collection of some of their earliest recordings and recommend folks take a listen to some of their works. nice contribution to the calypso arena.

also Lord Tanamo was a vet in the bizness. although he later became more popular doing full time ska/soul, his first recordings were calypso medley's.

below is a pic....
