Claiming our Culture

I just wanted to put out there. MTV is launching a caribbean channel called Tempo. Now, while I think it is about time that someone caters to the caribbean culture. I feel as a culture that we do what we have to, so that we prevent them from diluting our culture with American crap. Those people (corporate white collar) will be thinking of dollar signs and since they are going to make money off of us, we (as in the caribbean nation) should reap some of the benefits. I don't know the exact layout, but I think that we should be conscious of what they are doing with this channel and how they are portraying our people.

Cool

In no way shape or form do I want to be negative. I do believe that MTV is doing a great thing. If they didn't I would definitely have tried myself. Anyhow, I am basing my opinion on what happened to BET. It was a great network and it still is, but some of the programming that they put on the channel is so off (for lack of a better word). "College Hill" for example, was shot horribly and the content of it consisted of hot headed black students who seemed more interested in fighting with one another then truly portraying the live-in black college experience. Again, I don't want to be negative and I am not going to point fingers. All ask is if we see something wrong we say something. But anyway biggup to the caribbean community. We are finally moving forward. The caribbean channel is suppose to launch this month, November 2005. But I have not seen anything yet. If you want more info you can google MTV Tempo. CMC, the Caribbean Media Channel was also trying to launch a caribbean channel but they I believe are still working on it.

Is the channel gonna be available on regular cable, or will it be something that you have to order seperately? (I'm hoping it's the latter).

If it's a regular channel, then they will more than likely dilute it to reach a more broader audience. But from the previews I've seen, it seems to be pretty good...........so far

(It launced this month in the Caribbean)
