HIT AFTER HIT FOR SQUARE ONE Just mention the name Square One to anyone in the Caribbean and millions of others in the United States, Canada and Europe and immediately hips start to sway and people begin to hum and sing their numerous hits. Regarded as one as the top two bands in the Caribbean, Square One was formed 15 years ago and the band has traveled the long, hard road to success. The members of the band - lead singers Alison Hinds, Andy 'Blood' Armstrong and Cecil 'O'Shaka' Riley; bass guitarist Paul Slater, drummer Winston Beckles, keyboard player George Jones and steel pannist, keyboardist and percussionist Terry Arthur - refined their talents working with such international artistes as Eddy Grant before their break-out CD 4 Sides in 1996. This CD produced the chart-buster Ragga Muffin along with such other hits as Ring Kiting and the critically acclaimed Black History. To show their versatility, the CD was also spiced with memorable remakes of The Locomotion, Down on the Corner and Twist and Shout. The quality of the CD did not surprise those who had followed the band over the years and as if buoyed by this success Square One came even better in 1997. That follow up CD Sweetness is still a bestseller two years after it was released. The hits just kept rolling off the album. They include Aye Aye Aye, Turn It Around (The Plumber), Ju Ju, and Sugar (Sweet). In that same year Square One also contributed In the Meantime to a compilation album and that song not only won the road march at Barbados' carnival, Crop-Over, but it also became the signal for millions of other around the world to start to dance. In 1998 Square One declared themselves In Full Bloom and songs from that CD have gone on to top the charts in almost very Caribbean territory as well as at numerous radio stations in North America and Europe. In St. Lucia, DJ Ride topped the charts at Radio Caribbean for four consecutive weeks before being replaced by another Square One hit Faluma. At another station in that country, Radio St. Lucia, Faluma took just two weeks to take over the No.1 spot on the charts. Over in St. Vincent, Bandit Dance rose rapidly to the top of the charts at the Hits FM radio station. In Trinidad and Tobago DJ Ride, Faluma ,Kitty Cat, Electricity, Mannequin, Bandit Dance, La La and 25 dominated the charts. A similar thing has been happening throughout the region. The album's popularity is not limited to the region as it is also making a big impact in England where Faluma has reached the top of numerous West Indian music charts while in Canada DJ Ride, Mannequin, La La and Kitty Cat are all very popular. Next came Fast Forward in 1999 and the success story was repeated again as Togetherness and Iron Bazodee topped the charts wherever soca music is played. The year 2000 saw Square One reaching for Higher Heights and the CD of that name saw the band confirming its status as one of the best soca bands in the world. The CD had such hits as Pokemon, Go Girls, Carnival Baby, Wild Meat, Hot Galz, Murder and Top Class Bubbler. The success of these albums has led to Square One being in great demand around the world playing at sold-out shows all over the United States and Canada, as well as in Europe and almost every Caribbean country. Square One has been one of the leading Caribbean musical acts at all of the leading carnivals in United States, Canada and the Caribbean, including Trinidad, for the past five years. The band has won numerous awards over the past ten years the most recent being at the Reggaesoca Music Awards in Miami, Florida in April. THE SQUARE ONE BEAT GOES ON AND ON They have become synonymous with top quality Caribbean music. A sort bedrock on which you can depend for captivating soca music year after year. And 15 years since they first came together, Square One is still one of the most dynamic bands in the Caribbean region. From Trinidad to Guatemala to New York to London, people have continued to sing the praise of the seven-member band from Barbados. In Guatemala, a country not often associated with soca music, the band members – Alison Hinds, Andy Armstrong, Paul Slater, Winston Beckles, George Jones, Terry Arthur and Cecil Riley – were delightfully surprised to discover that the hit Faluma had been number one on the charts of one radio station for an astounding 45 weeks. This follows up on a highly successful 2001 when the band released two CDs Missing Files Collection, which features music recorded by Square One over the past five years but never released and remixes of some of the band’s top hits and Champions which spawned a number of hits including Girls Bam Bam, Wine Back, Bandannas, and Move. The latter CDs is given an international flavour through the vocals of rap star Foxy Brown on the track Put it Up. A touch of nostalgia is provided by the remake of the Lord Invader classic Don’t Stop the Carnival. Lead vocals of the album are shared by Andy Armstrong, Alison Hinds and Cecil Riley while bass player Paul Slater steps into the spotlight to sing The Water. In 2002 the band is looking to continue the soca revolution with the CD Unity, a sixteen track collection that is sure to have something for all lovers of Caribbean music.
