Bajan Monarch Supports Imix

REIGNING MONARCH Kid Site is all for what IslandMix.com – the website which recently made headlines after several local songs were found on it – is doing.

Stating he was a registered member of IslandMix.com, he said he was backing
the owners of the site because they were doing a good job of promoting Caribbean music.

"This has been very evident in their promotion of Jamaican and Trinidadian music. There was never any problem from those regional areas, but the problem seems
to be from Barbados and I can't see why," said the two-time Pic-O-De-Crop king.

He said not only had the site been giving regional music much-needed exposure throughout the world; but the fear of one downloading its contents was unfounded.

"You can hear the music, and of course any time music comes from a computer you can attach a recorder and record it, but the quality would be very poor. The site is for people to go on and hear the songs," he explained.

When asked about the fact that several Barbadian artistes had not given permission for their music to be exposed on that site, Kid Site said he himself had given permission and would continue to do so, along with a number of artistes whose music was now back online.

"I just believe IslandMix took it for granted that the Bajan artistes wanted the promotion, as is the case with Jamaicans and Trinidadians who implored them to put their music on. Probably it's a misunderstanding," he told MIDWEEK ENTERTAINMENT.

IslandMix.com owner Lester Mendoza said in a recent article that efforts had been made to reach local artistes but added that the site would seek to improve its marketing.

Kid Site said the music would also be heard by promoters in North America and other countries, thereby causing artistes to get bookings after Crop-Over.

While there was contention about the site not contacting artistes directly, one cultural official said it might not have been necessary to do so, since the artistes all had publishers.

"The publisher has the right to expose your music as much as possible. So IslandMix wouldn't need to go directly to the performer . . . once they see the publisher's label they might have immediately felt it was okay to push certain labels with whom they would have dealt before," he said.

But he also conceded that the label owners or publishers could have communicated this to the artistes.

Good article.

However, if the artists are so much behind the promotion why is it some songs from an artist are on while others from the same artist are not.

I can’t speak for the artiste. But I don’t think they would like their whole album on the site. This may lead to a decline in sales. Our main reason is to promote the artiste so people can buy their music and support Caribbean culture
