i dont know if this will help you in regards to lighting..

I just watched the video this evening and he covers some points I have stumbled upon myself.
I did price out a softbox set up.....around $900....not worth investing in for me since this is just a weekend hobby. Doing my DIY route so far has been good......although I am spending tons of money on all kinds of table props

Yup, I have purchased those already...actually I use the white one as a diffuser closest to my light source which is usually a window or a screen door.

I made a white and black deflector out of foam board as well - cheap and effective too.

Shooting food creates a ton of shadows in the wrong spots and both things have been effective in changing the lighting.

    Hello Fellow Photogs,

Time for our 1st themed project....."Leading Lines" The lines are used to direct the viewers attention to the subject. Or what I have found, the lines can become the subject.

Mi sista BuggyLady - I know food photog is your thing, so def. get creative with all the yumminess as it relates to the theme. But feel free to make something other than food your subject.

Photos are due 02/18/13...for themes, we should submit at least 2.

    KEEP SHOOTING!

    Examples of.......*none are mine"

    Leading lines...
    Week 3

    Shutter Speed: 1/800
    Aperture: f/9.0
    ISO: 100

The lens hood was on wrong I guess? Don't really know but it gave it an unintended vignette at the top... but I like it... You can also see the hood shadow at the bottom

Yesterday i took the day off and hung out at the botanical gardens with my friend. I am not any good at taking photos of anything besides food but I gave it a go anyways. lol

This is the best I could do with the leading lines theme.

I was trying to capture the reflection/lighting on the floor leading up the the triangular sign a the entry but the row of windows on the left side dispersed the light.

    ISO 400
    1/40
    F5.0

This was my second attempt. The gardens are in 3 pyramids here. I tried to capture the window lines leading up to the roof with the chinese latern in the middle. Not great but I tried.

Camera didnt record the settings for this picture but I think it was
    ISO 400
    f 1/100
    f2.8

This one I was just happy to get the bokeh effect working right in the background lol Flower could be a little sharper.

    ISO 400
    1/100
    f2.8

@Bug...I swear you need a swift kick!

All 3 shots are really good, but the 1st is my favorite as the project is concerned. Really digging the dark feel of it, makes me think of the movie "The Mummy". The 2nd photo is nice also, would've been best but it's a little over exposed.
