Mainframes

IT techs need some homework help.... what are the main reasons that mainframes almost went out of production? Well besides the obvious cheaper PCs and supercomputers becoming available. I know they're making their way back, and thats the other part of my homework but i think i have that covered. Help

regular computers are easier accessible (parts, software, etc) and of course cheaper to obtain.

Remember mainframes require special environs and treatment whereas regular PCs survive in the locations a mainframe wont

Taken from one of my storage fundamentals slides. Looking at mainframes and open systems from a storage perspective.

Slide 1: Data Storage Models: An Evolution
Centralized: terminals connected to a Mainframe computer which had connectivity to internal or external storage devices (disks, tapes)
Decentralized: With the advent of Open Systems, business units within an enterprise adopted a Client-Server model
Centralized: Networked Storage (the current “best practice” model being used in IT)

Notes:
Historically, a centralized model for computing and data storage was the only available option. Processes had to be in place to access the data. Data was not accessible immediately. Users had to submit job requests and wait for the data center administrator to run the jobs and return the results. This model introduced considerable delays in new application development and deployment.
With advances in networking, the client-server model became prevalent. In this distributed model, business units within an enterprise could have access to their own servers and storage. Applications no longer had to wait in one central queue for data access and execution. However, this leads to fragmentation of information. It also becomes difficult to enforce uniform processes and policies, as well as to manage these islands of information. The concept of Networked Storage was developed to address these shortcomings. Technologies and strategies were developed so that data can be stored centrally and allowed access to it for different applications. Networked Storage allows servers to access data. There are two main ways to access data in Networked Storage: SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network Attached Storage), which are discussed in more detail throughout this course. The benefit of using this solution is that data is centrally located and kept on disk in a storage system.
