HELP!!! External Hard Drive Crash

i have a WD 80gb external hard drive (Passport)for bout 2 plus yrs now and two weeks ago i was workin on some music and all of a sudden windows giving me this dialog box saying drive not recognizable...there is no knocking sound and the light on the drive is still on. how i fix this thing or recover the stuff on there cus i have bout 23gb of music, bout 3 yrs of college work, papers and case studies and pics on there.

"buy" some data recovery software and try it if the data is worth it.

if no error codes or clicking sound... then it shudn't be that bad...

- try with another cable
- try with another computer
- take out the hd and add it directly onto your computer if its IDE or SATA

This happened to me b4 with an external drive... the thing wouldn't read... but i actually gave up... left it for 24hrs and it worked again... no lie

i try them two already and the same dialoug box comes up but i'll have to try the third or just put it aside for a while then try again.

Try a different cable with a different USB port... Once the drive is not clicking and powers up correctly then you should be fine. Second best scenario is get an external usb to sata controller and plug up the drive that way.. You would have to void any warantees by opening the case however....
