Yes 1st Strike To Legacy
THE WAIT and speculation are over: One of two bands resulting from the recent demise of the Legends mas organisation, Legacy, will launch its Carnival 2005 presentation at The Anchorage, Chaguaramas, on Saturday, October 16.
Under the banner of Big Mike and Friends, the new organisation is presenting a self-titled portrayal, Legacy, designed by bandleader "Big Mike" Antoine and offering improved masquerader options, even as standard facilities like all-inclusive sections, mobile toilets and in-house security remain intact. Music for the road will come from soca band Tripple XXX (featuring Eddie Charles) and DJs Sound FX, DJ Lalo and DJ Franco. "We are, of course providing our masqueraders with thoughtful designs and great music, but security will also enjoy high priority status, with a specially-trained team sensitised to the conditions of Carnival on the road and needs of revellers," Antoine said. From its first outing, Legacy will present two kings and two queens of the band, those responsibilities undertaken by reigning national monarchs Curtis Eustace and Alana Ward, plus Pamela Gordon and Wayne Madray, two regular finalists at the annual contest. Sections with familiar names like Ann & Raj, Shut Up and Wine, The Kingsmen, Mao Brothers and Ras FM will continue in Legacy (others are to be soon announced). "Although there is no longer a band called Legends, it has left us its Legacy," Antoine said. "Much of our focus will be placed on providing fun, fun and more fun for our masqueraders. Naturally, we will put on a great show and give our masqueraders a chance to have their moment in the spotlight-to play themselves on stage in front of the whole world and Legacy will be doing everything possible to ensure they are facilitated in every way towards achieving this end," he said. Reiterating comments made at a news conference held at the National Library and Information Service (NALIS) on May 11, Antoine said: "What the public has come to know of me in Legends will be there in greater supply with Legacy. I have always tried to send a positive message or make an uplifting statement, which is emphasised by my opening presentations, for example in Real Unity and Nostalgia. "My greatest joy has always been to bring people together and provide them with an opportunity to have a great time, and to put on a fantastic show which could proudly represent Trinidad and Tobago to the outside world. Legacy is committed to that same policy. "For me, the Carnival, the culture and being able to give people a great time, is what I love and I live for-it is my passion and what I intend to continue to do for a long time. My vision is that Trinidad and Tobago Carnival be internationally known as truly the Greatest Show on Earth and the Mother of all such Carnivals and Legacy will make its contribution to that promise," Antoine said. Antoine and Friends will be continuing consultations with and assistance to a number of overseas Carnivals. Already they are committed to carnivals in Grenada, Barbados Crop Over, London's Notting Hill, Boston, New York's Labour Day, Long Island and St Maarten and will be helping an organisation in Miami for its Columbus Day festival before returning to Trinidad for the October 16 launch of Legacy. "My international connections have all sent their best wishes and have expressed their hope that I will continue to work with them and offer my expertise, and I intend to do so," Antoine said, adding: "To me, our Carnival is one of this country's most precious resources and I am not even speaking about the significant additional economic activity it generates. "I am speaking about its cultural value, its historical value; it tells the story of who we are and where we have come from and it is such an interesting story that it has the power to bring people from all over the world to witness it. "Trinidad Carnival is so unique and compelling that it has become the prototype from which all of the West Indian-type Carnivals are patterned in the islands and internationally. We need to protect it, nurture it and develop it in a meaningful and sustainable way and Legacy will do its share of that task," he said. Asked if he felt any remorse about the split in Legends, Antoine said: "This kind of thing happens in families, in business, with friends and certainly with Carnival bands. We have come to this stage now; Legends will not continue to operate but its place in history is assured. "I just want to publicly thank each and everyone for their support over the years and offer the guarantee that Legacy will be a Carnival force to be reckoned with-so look out for us at what will be a very special launch and, of course, on the road for Carnival 2005.
