Brian W has an excellent point about the Evil displayed on J'ouvert Morning back in the day.......
..........A deeply religious parent will Definitely want to shelter and protect their offsprings from the sight of those Devils, Bats, Jab Jab, Robbers in Masks. ------Did Massa dress up as a Devil and Bat back in the day when we were macoing dey party from de Slave Quarters? |

Bats and Robbers came much later in the 19th century and were not derived from this. Those have seperate histories altogether and were never really part of J'Ouvert. And remember, although Carnival has its pagan roots, it was the Roman Catholic Church that adopted it as a kind of 'festival' to gradually convert pagans over into the Church. It was a prelude to Lent, this is why its butt up aganist Ash Wednesday. Christams is also pagan based feastival as is many things of daily life. But doh get meh started on this this early morning. |

Leave us alone. Well, I playin mas but maybe one would see me as more 'liberal.' Plenty people of all religions dont play mas, depending on how strict they are...SDA, Hindu, Muslim, Pentecostal etc. Guess to some ah allyuh, dem have issues. But truth is, dey eh have no more than anyone else. Dey just convicted about this and sticking to it, and dais respectable to me. Ah know some of my family will be on the beach...
