Carnival not the time for old music
While I am all for positive changes, and trying new things, the evolution which is taking place with our soca music in the fetes and especially on the road for Carnival leaves me longing for yesteryear.
How I miss the “good ole days” when the soca music played at Carnival was the music of that particular year. Playing old music in those days was synonymous with playing, Heaven forbid, reggae, rock, or music of a different vein at Carnival. This, once considered taboo, seems to be the new trend in town.
Whilst we would balk at the thought of wearing the same outfits we wore to last year’s fetes, or donning the same costume all over again, how is it that we are expected to be satiated with the same old music once more? Especially when, without fail, there is enough new, refreshing music annually to create the “mood” and keep the Carnival vibe fresh, alive and kicking?
This norm was disappointingly present in Carnival 08, a year which gave birth to fantastic new soca tunes. Did we really need to be subjected to the music of Carnivals past?
Certainly our performers have ample opportunity to showcase their collection of music at concerts and other events throughout the year. Of course the classics and oldies but goldies have a place and a time. However, the Carnival season certainly isn’t and should not be the time for nostalgia. Rather, it should continue to be a celebration of a hot, new season of our pulsating music.
I beseech the DJs and soca artistes to take heed. Out with the old and in with the new—at least during our “greatest show on Earth.”

But sometimes the masqueraders themselves used to complain about hearing the same 10/20 songs 500 times for the day... so some Djs resort to mixing in old hits cuz i guess by the time itz time to hype when u just heard GET ON OR ROLLIn 10 times in the last half hour itz kinda bummy, at least thatz the way i see it.. me tho i hear what u saying i think there may be enuff music & if mixed the right way u can stick to mostly the MUSIC OF THE SEASON on tha road!!!!!
