For those staying in hotels/guesthouses for Carnival...
Check out this link: www.tripadvisor.com
You could do a search for any hotel and read reviews from people who previously stayed there. Some are helpful and others are just funny as all hell. For Crowne Plaza: Traveler rating: Port of Spain: Crowne Plaza Hotel Port Of Spain: "disappointing - terrible value" Oct 17, 2005: A TripAdvisor Member, Vancouver, BC I traveled to this hotel with: business colleagues I recommend this hotel for: business travelers, large groups, seniors My visit was for: business Would I stay at this location again: probably not I called the hotel the day before coming to confirm late arrival. On arrival, the room was not ready. I stayed in a total of 3 rooms (first was 'smoking', second was flooded by air conditioner, 3rd was OK). The hotel is very 'worn around the edges' - it's an old Holiday Inn they've rebranded as a Crowne Plaza. But the rooms feel old - air conditioners don't work well, which is frustrating in 90-degree heat, 90% humidity. It's ludicrous that they're able to charge > $200/night. A hotel is under construction across the street (in 2005, the Crowne Plaza is surrounded by loud construction), so rates should fall when that hotel opens (late 2006?). Pluses: the staff were generally friendly, the high-speed internet connections were good, and it has a revolving rooftop restaurant! And the hotel taxis are way cool - early 70's Cadillacs and Lincolns. Also, good breakfast buffet. I never stayed at the Hilton, so can't compare, though the Hilton seems to have a much better location. The Marriott Courtyard looks shiny and new, but it's adjacent to a mall in suburbian wasteland. For Cascadia: I stayed at this hotel in: October, 2005 I stayed in this hotel and I must tell that it was a nightmare. One of the filthiest hotel. Strongly advise that family with young children should not even think of staying at this hotel. Immoral traffic (prostitution) place. A perfect hotel for people who are looking for cheap thrill. Some conferences are held there with the purpose of promoting prostitution. Keep away! Keep away!! I rather stay on the street than at this filthy place. A hotel of ill repute. |

The Hilton is rather old too but the food is really good
Kapok is cool. They don't take all major credit cards though. I think it was diners and Amex if i am not mistaken. Haven't stayed at the marriot since it is opened. will probably do so on my next trip because some of my collegues did last month and they said that it is nice. |
