Swimsuit is not a costume!

--- people want to dance their mas once more , says Peter Samuel

By Cecily Asson
HUMMING Bird Medal (Silver) recipient, veteran mas man Peter Samuel has faithfully promised that for Carnival 2006 masqueraders in his band will once again be able to dance their costumes!

The popular masquerader, who last Independence Day at the President’s House, had bestowed upon him the national honour for his contribution to culture and sport, is the man who danced and brought to life breathtaking costumes like “Tiger Tiger Burning Bright”, “The Serpent”, “Midnight Robber”, “Saga Boy”, “Sacred and Profane”, “Mancrab”, “Merry Monarch, “Lord of the Flies”, “Devil Ray”, and “Callalloo Dancing Tic Tac Toe”.

He told Sunday PUNCH there was now a clarion call by many, for the return of proper costuming on Carnival days.

That’s the reason he and partner Patrick Roberts of “2 Peas in a Pod” have parted ways with the band “Masquerade”, although they both successfully led a section with that band for the past three years.

Samuel said he felt he owed it to the concerned masqueraders to give them the costumes they wanted, and his views differed from “Masquerade”.

“So we parted ways amicably,” he stated.

“Too many people, both old and young are clamouring for costumes,” lamented the well-known, eight-time King of Carnival.

“They tell me they want costumes, they want to dance their mas’, and a swimsuit is not a costume.”

He told PUNCH that the mature masquerader was not the only one calling for proper costuming in the bands.

“The young crowd also frown upon the bikinis and beads every Carnival,” he went on.

“Just look at children’s mas’ today, they wear fantastic costumes, yet when time to play adult mas’, there is no one to cater for them ...”

He said it was his concern mainly for that younger generation who are not into bikini mas’, that he decided going on his own was the best thing to do.

“And I am happy with my decision ...”

Samuel said he had nothing against those who wanted to stay with bathing suits.

“I know this is a business, but no one can convince me that a bathing suit is a costume ...”

Samuel will launch his band later this month.
