Question about the Carnival(s) in South Florida

Why is it that the west Indians in South fl. know nothing about the carnival? I asked people at work and where I live if they went to the carnival, and they dont even know that there is a w.i carnival, they think I'm talkin about a fair with rides. And you wonder why the main representation comes from de Bklyn Crew,
I think its because of the lack of advertising..has this happened to anyone else down here?

This happens to me every year. People are so surprised that there is even a carnival in Miami. It is really sad and embarassing. I wanted to put something like this on Islandmix, but I am glad that you were able to do it first. There is a lack of local advertisement on the carnival. It seems like they only care about the national and international audience. I told myself that next year, I would get more involved in the carnival again, and hope that I can make a contribution so that the West Indians and Floridians in whole are able to know and understand that we have had a carnival in Miami for 21 years.

The funny thing about this, is that "African Americans" seem to be the large majority that do not know about the Miami Carnival. I worked with a Jewish lady who had already heard about it and was glad that we worked together cause I took her to websites and she ended up going to Broward Carnival last year - she and her husband had a blast.

I would say that many of the foreigners living here, like Brazilians and Cubans and even the Europeans who have made their homes here in South Florida, have a basic idea of the Carnival and when it is, and many of them attend.

But we do need to do some more promoting "MUCH MORE" I think MTV was on the road this year, so maybe after this year things will be better as far as the knowledge of the Carnival here in Miami.

I truly hope so, because this has been going on for too long.
