CDC moves to take Carnival to new level

Tuesday April 08 2008

by Afeefah Beharry

The Carnival Development Committee (CDC) is working on re-engineering a structure to manage the summer festival over the next two years.

Chairman of CDC Marlon Rawlins said the committee needs to ensure that Carnival is all inclusive and fully participatory.

“We are also looking at Carnival as a world class product. And by world class product we are ensuring that the level of the quality of the product that we put out there is one that all can agree is indeed of a first class standard,” Rawlins explained.

“We need to ensure that we have support at all levels and from all critical stakeholders of the festival.”

According to Rawlins, the CDC has implemented a new organisational structure which it thinks will reach maximum efficiency.

The committee has had its initial meeting with Minister of Culture Eleston Adams who has pledged his support for the activities and has already committed to assisting in putting on a workshop for the junior calypsonians.

“We have also met with key personnel in the Ministry of Tourism in an effort to ensure that we possibly collaborate in branding Antigua not only as a destination but also as a destination that offers one of the premier summer festivals in the Caribbean,” Rawlins added.

Rawlins also disclosed that there is a policy outline which will see the development and support of artistes who want to travel abroad to expose their culture.

Through the help of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda and the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS), the CDC is looking at a security disaster plan which will include having traffic rules and regulations during Carnival for parking in St. John’s.

CDC is also working on computerising Carnival by ensuring that the Web site allows for e-commerce so that people can purchase their tickets online.

“We are also looking at the computerisation of the tickets. They should be bar coded so that at any point in time, they can use the hand held scanners which will allow for greater efficiency and flow of traffic into and out of the grounds,” Rawlins explained.

“It certainly supports our financial requirements to ensure that, at any point in time, we have up to date records of the number of people who are in the grounds, the number of those persons who have complimentary tickets compare to those who paid.”

This year’s summer festival will see just about $4 million being expended on the event.

Carnival 2008 will be launched on 15 May and official celebrations will run from 26 July to 5 Aug.
