IS THIS A BLESSING OR A CURSE ?
49,000 tourists came for Carnival’ Carnival 2004 brought the largest number of foreign visitors, currently estimated at some 49,000, to T&T shores, National Security Minister Martin Joseph said yesterday. “This number does not include returning T&T citizens,” he said in the Lower House. Joseph said notwithstanding the unacceptable levels of crime and criminal activity in 2003, Government’s challenge this year was to ensure citizens, players and spectators enjoyed a safe, crime-free Carnival. He said it was common knowledge that a substantial amount of foreigners and citizens were given the impression that it was not safe to attend this year’s celebrations. However, he added: “It is a credit to the protective services and Defence Force that our Carnival, for all intents and purposes, was crime-free. “The minor incidents that had occurred during this period notwithstanding.” Joseph thanked Police Commissioner Everald Snaggs, his executive team and police officers for making this Carnival one of the safest. He also thanked Brigadier Ancil Antoine, Chief of Defence Staff, Defence Force officers, Brigadier Peter Joseph and the Anti-Crime Unit, fire officers, Crime Stoppers and bandleaders.
