MISS. SVG CONTeSTANTS
Meet the Miss SVG Contestants
Author: The Vincentian Published: 04/29/2009 ![]() Tenille Austin - Miss FirstCaribbean Bank International At age 5, she attended the Petersville Primary School, and commenced dancing in the form of ballet, including modelling. At age 7, she joined the Junior Dance Company, taking classes in various types of dance and their techniques. Such dance types were ballet, creative folk, modern traditional; and eventually getting the opportunity to take part in the National Dance Festival. During this time, also, she became a member of the Girl Guides Association in the form of a Brownie, and attended her first international camp in Barbados. At Junior 5 level, she showed early leadership skills in being the deputy head girl of the school. At age 11, she entered the St. Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown. Here, she continued to develop her talents by joining the choir, the school’s steel orchestra and the Girl Guides group, which allowed her to travel to England and then onward to Sweden for one month on her second international camp. In February 1999, she decided to enter the school’s yearly pageant, Miss SJCK, in which she was adjudged the winner. Subsequently, she was a participant in the Literary and Arts competition in dancing, singing and choral speech. At Form 4, she joined the Junior Achievement programme where she received the award for the top sales person of the year. She left St. Joseph’s Convent with 10 CXC passes and moved on to the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College. At college, she was involved in extracurricular activities in the form of Latin dancing. She was also an active member of the youth group in her church, which motivated her to attain the presidency of the SVGCC Latin Dance Group and leader of the St. George’s Cathedral Youth Group by her second year. Later she joined the Allegro Dance Company. Still actively involved in the Girl Guides Association, ranked as Ranger, she was able to visit the beautiful country of Chile in December 2004 on her third and final international camp. She left the college with three A’ level subjects and General Paper. She was employed at the St. Martin’s Secondary School for a year, teaching Geography, Integrated Science and Dancing. As a dance instructor, she assisted a group of students from the St. Martin’s Secondary School in winning the first ever Schools Dance-off Competition in 2006. It is her intention to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management Studies at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. This will enable her to fulfil her career goal as a Hotel Manager. Presently, she is an accounts clerk at Island Wide Shipping Agencies Ltd, which is owned and operated by her father. Kristell Heather Cambridge - Miss Mustique Co. Ltd. She feels that she is an energetic and ambitious young lady, who has the ability and commitment to achieve her goals. She was born to Heather Cambridge and Mc Carthy Lewis on the beautiful island of Bequia on July 3, 1989. She spent the first three years of her life in Bequia with her family before coming to live in mainland St. Vincent. She is a past student of the C.W. Prescod Primary School, and went on to the St. Joseph’s Convent, Marriaqua. Her favourite subject at that time was Electronic Document Preparation Management. She was the President of the 4H Club, the Vice President of the Students’ Council and the Public Relations Officer of the St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua Young Leaders. She graduated from SJCM in 2007 and obtained six O’level passes. Her hobbies include dancing, modelling, reading and interacting with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Being the eldest child for both parents, she aims to be a role model for her younger siblings. Her mother has worked hard to get Kristell to where she is today; and she feels that her mother is the definition of a strong black woman. She enjoys travelling, which allows her to meet people and experience different cultures. In fact, she is a tour guide employed at Hazeco Tours part-time. Tour guiding allows her to meet people from all over the world. Moreover, it improves her communication skills. She enjoys making people happy and comfortable when she interacts with tourists. She is also employed at SKR Beverages as a promoter, which makes socialising with people from different backgrounds so much easier. She has always had a passion for the Miss SVG Pageant. She sees it as a great learning experience, with the added benefit of gaining a scholarship to attend university. She would like to go to the University of the West Indies to study Business Management. She has always had a passion for fashion. She loves colours. Two local fashion designers whom she admires are Kimon Baptiste and Lisa Cordice. She feels that their work is unique and creative. She intends to promote our local talent whenever she pursues her career in fashion business. One of her goals will be to obtain a minor in Tourism Management which will help her to promote St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a tourist destination. Nickillia Slater - Bridgewater – Miss Lotto “You have to suck the sour to gain the sweet” is an old saying that her grandfather uses often, and one that guides her to this day. Out of the small fishing village of Clare Valley, is 23 year-old Nickillia Slater-Bridgewater. She was blessed to have an extended family which helped her to develop positive family values. Her uncles and aunts all helped with the parenting responsibilities, and this has successfully impacted in shaping and moulding her character as it is today. At age 12, her mother Lucy Slater died leaving six children, the eldest being 18 and the youngest 4. Although it was an extremely trying time for her family, she kept focusing on being a success like her mother always wanted. Her mother often said “when people have plenty children, some turn out good and some bad. Well, all my children must come good”. As a past student of the Bishop’s College, Kingstown and the St. Vincent Community College, she feels that she is a well-grounded individual. Teenage pregnancy, business aid for young entrepreneurs, poor customer service and boosting the creative arts industry are her major concerns in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; and she feels that all of these are equally important if we are to build a modern society. Moreover, she feels that art industry is a reflection of many things, such as: human creativity, a window to the past, an appreciation of the present and a questioning of the future. She believes that enough is not being done in allocating, uplifting and promoting our locally skilled and talented individuals. She enjoys sporting activities, reading, and having clean fun, with the attitude that “my body is my temple”. As a multi-skilled individual, her passion lies in law, cosmetology and fashion designing. She is on the cusp of a career within the fashion designing industry where she operates a small business. As a former Miss South Leeward beauty Queen, capturing the Miss SVG 2009 title would not only contribute to her personal development, but would inspire other young ladies with similar background and commitments to aspire to achieve things once thought beyond their reach or status. She feels that when one’s actions positively affect the lives of many, then one’s influence reaches eternity. She knows that she will be an excellent ambassador at home in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and abroad. |

Veronique Williams - Miss Darcheville Construction Equipment Sales Caribbean Ltd.
Her name is Veronique Petra Williams, a 20-year-old resident of the town Chateaubelair in the North Leeward district of St. Vincent. She is the second child of seven children born to Ms. Sonia Williams and Artis Findlay. She considers herself fortunate in having been raised by her great grandmother, who instilled in her, during her formative years, the morals and values of life. Her early teenage years were spent in Antigua & Barbuda, where she encountered and experienced a more diverse cultural community before returning to beautiful SVG in 2002. Her secondary school education was provided by the Petit Bordel Secondary School, where she obtained nine O’level subjects at CXC/GCE examinations in 2006. She was awarded the Ministry of Education’s top performer of her school. Subsequently, she attended the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College where she pursued courses in Sociology, Business Studies and Communication Studies. Her interest in fashion and pageantry is profound, and for this reason she joined the Mije Personal Development Agency to enhance her skills in these areas. She has participated in various fashion shows. She entered the Miss North Leeward Pageant in 2008, where she placed 2nd runner up. She received the best Swim-wear and People’s Choice awards at that show. That was her first pageant and it was an exciting time and experience for her. She currently works at the National ICT Training Project (NICTTP) as a receptionist. She enjoys seeing new faces every day, and she is very proud of the Project’s aim, which is to make as many Vincentians, especially those living in rural communities, computer literate. She is a friendly, ambitious and spontaneous individual. She enjoys reading, writing, watching TV and socialising. Her main goal is to become a strong and successful financial consultant. To this end, she has been looking at institutions that offer degrees in financial courses, which she can pursue. Participating in the Miss SVG Pageant has always been a part of her dream. She is optimistic about this opportunity, as it will afford her a stepping stone in combining her love for fashion and a desire to pursue academic studies. She is only one step closer to attaining another of her life goals. Eshurnia Glasgow - Miss Williams Agencies & Fragrances She was born on November 12, 1986 in St. Vincent. She lives with her mother Vanda, her father Ricardo, her sister Anneka and her brother Christopher. She is the eldest of her siblings and also the one they look up to. But like all brothers and sisters, they fight. But she still loves them and will do anything for them. Eshurnia attended the Richland Park Government School, after which she attended the Mountain View Adventist Academy high school in Richland Park. After school, she became a pre-school teacher at the Children of Tomorrow Pre School for a few months. She is now working at the Grenadine House located in Kingstown Park, for a little over one year. She is currently a member of the Blue Angels Modelling/Personal Development Agency. She is also Miss P’tani 2008. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, cooking, baking and modelling. Life to her means family and friends who trust her and whom she can trust. She is pretty much on the happy side of life, but like everyone, she has to cope with her bad days. The year 2015 will make 12 years since she graduated from high school. She thinks that in the years ahead, she would still be living in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; that she would be happy and comfortable with her living situation. She plans to be married, to have two children, have her own house and own a restaurant. In the future, she would like to see all vagrants off the streets and put into a special home where they can be cared for, have proper food to eat, clothes and shoes to wear and be educated. Kimorra Lavia – Miss Super 6 She is 20-year-old Kimorra Lavia residing in the community of Clare Valley, which contributes greatly to the fishing industry in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She was born on April 22, 1988. She is the third of five children for her mother Maricha Ballantyne, and the last for her father Joseph Lavia. She is a past student of the Campden Park Secondary School and the St. Vincent Community College. From early childhood, she had the ambition to become an attorney-at-law. As she grew, this desire was strengthened when she often read the newspapers and saw the fearlessness and competency being displayed by women such as Justice Monica Joseph, Magistrate Deborah Thomas-Felix and Magistrate Sharon Morris-Cummings in pronouncing sentences on the “menaces” to our society. As a result, she regarded Justice Joseph as a role model. She was afforded the opportunity to attend the St. Vincent Community College and, driven by her aspirations, she chose Law as one of her courses. As a result, she has gained knowledge about the legal system and individual rights, which would be a stepping stone to the realisation of her dreams. She is a goal-oriented, sociable and adventurous individual. Her hobbies include socialising with her family, playing board games, reading and participating in recreational activities. Yasmeen Hadaway – Miss LIME Miss Yasmeen Anya Nicole Hadaway is a friendly, vibrant and creative 22-year-old, presently residing in the community of Queen’s Drive. Born on 23rd March 1987, she is the daughter of Marie Soleyn-Antrobus and Wade Hadaway. Receiving most of her education in the United States, Miss Hadaway graduated in 2004 from Stuyvesant High School in New York City and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 2008. Her decision to pursue her degree was greatly influenced by her dedication to dance training from the age of 4 years. She has studied most genres of dance at a professional level and has performed with a few notable choreographers and companies such as choreographer Arthur Aviles of New York City and the Malick Folk Performing Company in Trinidad. Yasmeen presently works as a sales associate at a department store in New York City and is a dance instructor for an after-school programme at a community centre in Brooklyn. After attending the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad and learning much about Trinidad’s folk culture, she gained interest in the connection between culture and the performing arts. She decided to enter the Miss SVG Pageant in hopes of expressing the importance of culture, education, and the arts in St. Vincent as her platform. She is passionate about education in the creative and cultural arts and intends to return to university for a Master’s in Arts Administration. Her future goal is to start her own performing arts theatre company with the aim of collecting, preserving and expressing Vincentian folk culture. Asmara Whiskey – Miss Caribbean Medical Imaging Centre Her name is Asmara Whiskey, and although she was born in Switzerland, she has made this beautiful island of St. Vincent her home from since her mother, a native of Switzerland, and her father, a born Vincentian, and herself moved here when she was only three years old. She grew up in Calliaqua where her grandparents lived. She was a “tom-boy” playing with the boys; and she has the scars to prove it. She attended the Kingstown Anglican School, after which she attended the St. Joseph’s Convent, Kingstown. In school, her favourite subject was Geography. She was especially interested in the chapters on beaches and coral reefs and how they taught us to take care of our planet. She has always been fascinated by beauty pageants. So that in 2007 she was crowned Miss East St. George. By participating in Miss SVG 2009, she hopes to achieve one of her life’s goals and become an excellent ambassador for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which includes being a role model for young women in our country. In the future, she hopes to be involved in cosmetology for which she has always had a passion. She believes that by improving the outward appearance of people, in their clothing or make-up and making them look their best in whatever way she can, can help to improve their self-esteem. Her motto in life is simply be the best one can be and always reach for the stars. |
