my theory is this- if the person thinks the sky is orange but I'm telling them the sky is blue and gave the legit reasons for my statement, at the end of the discussion they will still stick to their idea no matter what...

this is true...people are going to think what they will...ofcourse it helps when you know the history of the traditional mas characters and can explain them to people who dont know and see the images simply as devilish...

This is part of the reason why I said "why bother". I'm all for educating and sharing w/regards to my culture, but what do I really stand to gain from the experience...one more tourist?

Hardly worth the effort... unless it's really important to me to have this person leave the conversation more enlightened than when they came.
